Will only taking a piston out is all it takes to turn a Chinese SKS into bolt action?

Since the Chinese SKS doesn't have that switch like the Yugo one on the gas block. So if I wanna just do bolt action for testing can I just take the piston out and leave an empty gas tube? Is there any diff if I take the whole piston + gas tube out (I can imagine doing this has a chance to allow small debris to blow back from the gas block)? Is this ok to do so either way?
 
That is my question as well. I have several SKS's of different variety, but can't say that I've ever fired one. I would like to set one up as a bolt action and use it for shooting cast.

I'm sure someone will come along to answer. :)

I have shot mine without the piston and it will not cycle. Renders it a bolt action. Without the cover risks you getting gas and debris thrown back at you. Hope that helps.

This. The gas has to go somewhere.

It works but those gasses come straight back into your face. You might only feel a warm breeze butttttttttttt?
 
Yea we like to break perfectly functioning things that we think have an endless supply. What ! It’s called customized to make it my own. It needs to be unique. Reminds me of the movie slap shot when they make the bus look mean.....

That's next to impossible with any SKS.

The SKS is a very simple and efficient design for battlefield conditions and accuracy but a 1 moa rifle??????????????????????

I did see one that had been rebarreled with a 1 inch barrel without a gas port and a .308 bore that would shoot very close to that with select hand loads.

Most milsurp ammo just isn't good enough for moa shooting.

I have a Howa 1500 that shoots handloads it likes into just over moa. No matter which bullets I put through it, it just doesn't get better. I have seen a few bolt action rifles chambered for the 7.62x39, with .308 bores shoot into significantly less than moa but that's a whole different game with much better bullets available.

Come on man ..... anyone who has any SKS experience knows that was in fun !
 
the sks can function without several of its parts.

You can remove the piston and turn it into a bolt action It makes that short rod very dirty though.

You can also remove the recoil spring. I put the dust cover back on for safety but even that was not needed.

If you remove the recoil spring make sure you take out the piston too.
 
If you only want one rd at a time just load 1.


If for whatever reason I wanted to turn an SKS into a manually operated repeater I would weld the barrel port shut and remove the piston.
Leave the recoil spring in place and voila...a pretty quick and user friendly bolt action rifle. Can't see why one would get rid of the spring...??

Would sure simplify cleaning after shooting corrosive...barrel rinse only :)

Would be a god approach IF semis got banned...and they didn't ban the SKS by name or design alone......

This may become nec sooner than we think.

Just because CT pulled SKSs from their shelves?
Not the first time it happened, probably won't be the last either. Personally not going to be surprised if this turns out to have been caused by Barnaul availability.
