9mm 124grn Campro HP and Winchester 231 Load

I plan on reloading using campro 124grn HP and Winchester 231. But I cannot really find a load for it. 124 grn HP is the heaviest bullet the local shop sells. Also W231 is the powder everybody at PPC uses. So might as well use that.

Hodgdon only got one load for that powder and grn of bullet. Its in between 3.9 and 4.4. Online people say they load around 4.3grn.

I be using probably a Alfa Project 6" revolver and probably a Grand power K100. What loads do you use?

4.3-4.5gr W231 using CCI500 or WSP primers at 1.115" COL and taper crimped to 0.378" all make excellent loads with the 124gr CamPro Plated RN, which is what I use. The W231 powder charge ranges for the RN and HP are both 4.4-4.8gr according to CamPro's data sheets, FYI.
The CamPro document posted above is not innacurate based on what I've found in my testing, but things would get really snappy in the top end of that range, and I don't see any need to go that high, especially with a COL as short as 1.090"

Try 4.3gr and see what you think, that is my primary range load now. Used to be 4.5gr at a 1.150" COL, but found after some testing that my PPQ 5", USP9 and X6 all seemed to work more consistently with a slightly shorter COL.
4.5gr is still a nice moderate recoil load, and should have no problem making power factor if that's an issue for you. For that matter, neither should 4.4gr.
W231 is my favorite powder for 9mm in terms of metering, burn and consistency. Titegroup would be a close second, followed by Unique. I've worked up excellent loads with all three of those powders, but W231 is the easiest to work with. Bench rest accuracy has been excellent with all three powders in their mid range load weights.

My load is 4.3gr of W231, any 124/125gr projectile, CCI small pistol primers.

I use a Shadow, so my OAL is 1.087.
 
What FPS are people WIN 231 loads running? I just got back running 4.0 and its shooting mid to high 1100 FPS.

Using a 6" Alfa and a 5" 1911

Definitely use caution with the Campro HP. I found that I got irratic pressures (blew up cases and popped out primers) when using these bullets. The powder charge wasn’t high and my OAL was 1.145 and consistent. The difference from one round to another was drastic. This leads me to believe that there was substantial difference in the bullets leading to these issues.

A commercial reloader told me he will not use Campro because of poor quality control (inconsistencies).YMMV

Yeah, that's definitely more in line with 4.0gr of W231. I started at 3.8gr when I worked up my 9mm loads with this powder and didn't like the way it shot until ~4.1gr. Got enough FTE's from 3.8-3.9gr in my X6 and PPQ that I did not consider staying near that level for my range rounds. Again though, at 1.115" C.O.L.

As for QC on the CamPro bullets, can't say as I've noticed any deficiencies in the ~2000 I've loaded in 9mm and 45ACP so far, but then I'm not exactly the most discriminating of reloaders or shooters.

If anything my recoil spring will give me a issue. Its still 12# I should lower it to a 11#. But at least with the 75 I shot from my gun, it feeds and ejects fine.

Likewise with my HK USP9, it will eat anything. Probably a combination of feed path design and recoil assembly, but never got any issues the way I did with my other 9mm's.
Honestly it's whatever your particualar gun likes; and then maybe if you're thinking of competing, what makes power factor as well.
 
I don't need to make a PF. Just house league PPC. I guess I'm running 3.9-4.0 depends on which scale I use. I only had 1 Jam ( was shooting weak hand ) and 1 short stroke ( probably not enough powder ) in my 1911 with 12# spring. Probably has to do with the choppy throw of my Lee power measure.
 
^ use 4gr of titegroup under 124gr campros as well, works very well. Save my 231 for other calibres. Believe I was using around 4.2gr of 231 when using it under 124gr campros before.

What C.O.L if you don't mind me asking? I found 4.0gr really snappy at 1.150" when running out of my USP9 (and have since gone with an even shorter C.O.L. of 1.115" which tends to work a better out of all of my 9mm pistols), so I wasn't thinking of going with that load if I ever decided to play around with Titegroup for 9mm again.
 
Yeah seems like 4.0 grns 1.089 OAL is my standard power load. Works in my 1911, and Grand Power. Chrony around 1040 FP. I'm running my revolver at 2.8 grns around 700 FPS for PPC.
