I got this Lakefield Mossberg single shot for free from a fellow Gunnutz (Thanks again okcorral 1881) and removed the rust with vinegar + 0000 steel whool. The steel got treated with True Blue. The stock was sanded and covered with Tru Oil.

I'm pretty happy with this 1st attempt at refinishing a firearm. I just have to take it out for a test drive before teaching my daughter to shoot with it.

Good candidate for a DIY refinishing job, looks pretty good! Not sure if you used sandpaper alone on the stock...but always a good idea to get as much of an original finish off with a gentle (Chemical) stripper first. I've used "Circa 1850" on more than a few guns with great results.

I watched a bunch of videos on youtube before getting started and used a varnish stripper first. That stuff was strong and stinky!! Finished the job with very fine sandpaper.

Wow!
You have done a nice job bringing back an old rifle, but what's really special, is what you intend to do with it.
Well Done Sir. Enjoy making the memories with your little girl.

Hard to mistake that original Cooey stock shape. Nice job. There is always pleasure shooting something you have fixed up. I usually rub the stock down briskly with 0000 steel wool and the finish I used or just some Danish oil. They all mix just fine. I like that baby bum smooth feel it leaves. Then after it has dried for a week I use some paste wax to bring the shine up just a little and protect everything under it. When hand rubbing I roll out the steel wool and cut a pad the size of my palm and rub till I feel heat and then move on. After that rub with a soft flocked cloth. Its the rubbing that actually gives the polish of a hand rubbed finish. Its a lot of work but the payoff is great. Nice resurrection.

Thank you! Life with a young family has been busy lately and haven't got the chance to take my daughter to the range yet. Maybe this week-end? LFT to it!
