Apparently the answer is 5. While out hunting with the guys the other day, my daughter snapped this picture of us looking for a bird up in a tree. Yes we got the bird.

Shooting a 22 in to a dense forest in Northwest Ontario literally over 30 miles away from the nearest building on a road running east/west shooting south. I think we were good.

At the angle the shooter in the photo is holding the gun?
I don't think so.
Even a projectile from a 22lr can carry a fair distance.

Ontario MNR feels its safe to shoot a 22 into a tree at night hunting raccoons. I am confident that the gentlemen in the picture are safe and using common sense.
