How do you carry your gun with a pack on?

So this year I've decided I'm not going big game hunting without my pack. In the past when going only a few km from the truck, I would just take a fanny pack with knife, water, and a few other must have items in it, but this year after hiking way up into a cut I decided I don't want to have to walk back to the truck for my pack if I down something just to climb back up to where I was.

My problem is my sling drives me nuts. It won't stay put. The only comfortable way to wear it is over top of the strap for the pack, but it tends to slide off and just generally be annoying.

I was thinking about getting a Gun bearer, or similar. https://store.kifaru.net/mobile/universal-gun-bearers-p197.aspx

What are people's experience with this kind of product? If you use something else, what do you use?

I take my handy gun bearer. :p

Either strapped into my pack when I need both hands or slung over my shoulder with a rubberized nylon sling.

A few years ago I was using a backpack with only one strap crossing over the chest, leaving the right shoulder entirely free. It also tied around the waist and was thus pretty stable and comfortable. I cannot remember the brand at the moment but it is american made, if it helps. Nowadays I just wear a Badlands Ambush fanny pack, to cut down on the weight. I tend to always carry too much stuff anyways...

Problem with carrying it is I often need both hands for other things. The woods be thick where I hunt.

I was hoping for a hands free carrying option that allows for quick retrieval if needed. I can put it in /on my pack but it's not accessible enough that way.

I carry too much too probably, but when the alternative is to have to return to the car to get a pack if i down something, I'd rather just carry the pack. It's only 20ish lbs, and it's probably good exercise or whatever. Lol

I guess it depends on your sling and your pack straps, but I can usually hook my sling in between my color bone and the strap of the pack so that the pack straps helps keep it on the shoulder.
I use a galco ching sling and a small eberlestock mini-me without the scabbard usually.

Maybe you can add some non slip material or a knot or someting on to your pack strap to keep your sling from sliding off?

The Kifaru gun bearer or a home made equivalent would solve your issue for sure. I've never tried one but it makes more sense then the eberlestock's with built in scabbards for hunting.

Depending on your torso size, the 1942 US Mountain pack was one solution to the problem of how to carry a rifle while skiing.

It's still only a half-jelled solution, and doesn't work well for larger humans as the steel tube frames are a one-size-fits-nobody arrangement.

I find that if I use a simple, thin nylon or leather sling it hooks over the padded backpack strap with little problem and seldom slips off. A "cobra" style sling is no good. it won't nestle into the hollow behind the shoulder strap of the pack. I the future I may add a big tall button on top of the pack strap, i've seen some do that and it keeps the sling strap from sliding off.

I built a version of the Kifaru Gunbearer system for my pack frame. I've also seen guys hang their slung rifle over the "horn" of their pack frame (guys who hunt without the top hoop on their pack).

Of course, in your front feet is also a handy way to carry it too.

This is the sling I have (without the grey, it's all black w/red logo).

I will try my 22lr sling and see if a sling that doesn't have a wide foam rubber piece works any better... But honestly I don't think it's the particular sling that's the problem. I think my issue is with how insecure that is if I can't have one hand on the bottom of the sling. Something like the gun bearer seems like it could be the ticket, but i only just found out about those so i thought maybe there were other novel solutions that I was unaware of.

Hey BUM got any pictures of your setup? or care to give a bit of detail in how you built your own?

Take a look at a 3pt/tactical sling with a quick detach strap.

Hang it in front or tuck it behind your arm by you pack. Main body strap goes under the pack, quick detach untethers you.
