so we picked up an Alfa 9251c for the wife, and I picked up 10 moon clips for it locally and got out to the range with it for the first time on Saturday. We have very little experience with revolvers, this is the first we have owned. I would say about half the time we shot it, the spent casings and moon clip would not eject from the firearm, the other half of the time they ejected no problem at all. It seemed as if the casings were expanding and getting stuck in the cylinder?? We used two different types of commercial 9mm reloads in the pistol, it seemed to be less of a problem with the CRS reloads than it was with the Dominion Arms reloads, which seemed to stick every time? Could this be due to the casings used on the reloads, or do the cylinders on this gun need to be honed out or something??
Any ideas would be appreciated so I can figure this out, the wife wanted to try it in a competition, but that won't happen if she needs to pry out the empties lol
On a much brighter note,,,, this pistol is VERY accurate, and the double action pull, although much longer than we are used to, was quite manageable and easy to keep on target :)

You mentioned reloads....did you try it with factory ammo? Reloads shouldn't be a problem (I use use a lot of Centaure and Wolf in my revolvers without issue) but you never know. I'd try a box of factory ammo before i did anything else.

edit

It's also not impossible that it is an issue with the moon clips....are they factory Alfa clips?

buy a box of new ammo, reloads can be a problem in a tight chamber, or of it is a bit rough, ckeck the ammo for nice straight cases near the base.
See is the unfired ammo will slide in all the way with out the clips.
You may have to polish the chambers if they are not super smooth, no tool marks.

I bought an Alpha 2 years ago. I tried to use reloads that my CZ will run, only used Alpha moonclips, tried different type of brass and had nothing but issues. There were issues feeding and extracting. I sold it and moved on.

I used only ranch prod moonclip on my Alfa Proj 4.5" blued full length cylinder (so I assume it is a 9251 classic as well?) and I have no problem at all ejecting shells. I have tried these ammo below:

1) Sumbro 124gr bought from Tenda
2) FoC 124gr (and I believe they only do 124) reloaded 9mm
3) CCI Brazer 115gr
4) Custom Reloading (BC) 124gr mixed stamps cases but only fired around 100 rds since I only got 2 boxes left.

so far no problem with all. The only one time I had a stuck moonclip was not on this gun but the S&W 929 which I mixed half a clip with Sumbro and half with CCI. I will never do it again. the clip will have all ammo from the same brand and gr. So you can try any of the ammo above and see it gives your Alfa any trouble.

Thanks for the replies, I am using Alfa moon clips presently, I will look into the ranch prod clips and try some factory ammo also, hope I can figure this out and get it running dependably

The Alfa moonclips are suppose to be better actually if they weren't so darn expensive (x2) compare to the Ranch prod ones ;) So if you can keep using the alfa ones you should use them.

If I may add my 2 cents.........

I have and currently use an Alfa Proj. 9251 Stainless 9MM 4.5" barrel. It was purchased used from a respected nutter and good friend of mine.

I was having some of the mentioned issues above, Namely

-The DA pull was quite bad, gritty etc.

-I found that the chamber were Very tight, and would not chamber reloads that passed case guage.

However I was determined not to give up as I felt these were a great value!! With that in mind I sent mine to Bumble Bee Custom Machine in Prince George BC.

I had them:

- smooth the action

- ream all the Cylinder to Sami spec

- chambfer the cylinder holes for fast loading.

I spent a little over $200 getting the work done, and was money well spent.

Further at the time the Ranch Pro clips were not available, and I ordered 30 laser cut Stainless moon clips from TK custom in the US, along with their moon clip loading tool.

These clips were not cheap at almost $10 Canadian each, however they are some of the toughest clips I have ever used.

Now the revolver is much smoother, eats pretty well anything I feed it, and with the TK clips eject, and de-moon smoothly.

The only ammo I now have issue with is steel cased stuff. The steel cases do not seem to expand the same as brass, and tend to get stuck. Its not serious as I just need to use the rubber end of a pencil to knock them out, but its not worth the hassle, and I just use them in my 9mm AR now.

These are a fantastic revolver for the price, and with a little work done by a competent smith, can be really trouble free.

Just food for thought

Thanks for the info AbHobbyist! I will definitely consider what you did with yours, I also think it is a great revolver for the price, and being made by CZ, I have to think it is a quality product?? I really do love the look of it, and found it to be quite accurate, don't want to give up on it if it can be made to function properly :)

Are you sure about the "made by CZ" thing. I had one a couple of years ago and I pretty sure Alfa proj isn't connected with CZ.

Gents

I am unsure as to the Alfa Proj. connection with CZ (other than both being Czech companies)........

However regardless I truly believe the Alfa Proj revolvers are a fantastic value, and for the most part a well made production gun, they just need a little help to fantastic !!

Please remember these are just my thoughts, but I hope they were helpful

OkayShooter

Well the ones that I purchased directly from TK Custom seem to be based on the OEM clips, just out of stainless

OEM clips - steel (with factory brushes and moon clip unloading tool)

TK Custom Clips - Stainless

I know that they are pricey at $10 each, however the function is fantastic!!

Further I really like there Moon-Clip loading tool! It really makes short work of loading the clips, and really does help prevent clip warping.

Let face it, with a smoothed action, and good loading tools and clips, these revolvers are just plain fun to shoot.

Look forward to any constructive thoughts you might have

Yup fun revolvers. It's just hard to find the OEM moonclips. Gotta email places to see if what they pictured is the right product. I think Wolverines has them. I ordered from reliable to only get the ranch ones, when they pictured the OEMs. They just hold the rounds better.

Got back out on Sunday with the Alfa. After taking it home the first time, I gave the revolver a really good cleaning, this time out we had absolutely no problems with moon clips ejecting, so I'm thinking it might have just been dirty in the cylinders and jamming the rounds in there. We are lucky to have a LGS that is an Alfa dealer, so Alfa moon clips are no problem to get! That moon clip loading tool looks pretty sweet AbHobbyist, I will have to look into one of those. I gotta say, I really like this revolver, it's quite accurate and a hell of a lot of fun to shoot,
