Hi everyone, im thinking on buying my first shotgun, ive been browsing online and many people suggest the Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870.
After looking for some good deals I found this Mossberg 500 3-Barrel combo which seems like a good deal since it comes with 3 different barrels but im not a fan of the camo pattern.

I also found the "Mossberg 590A1" which seems to have more shell capacity and a color more in line for what im looking for (black, dark gray). But is more expensive and only comes with one barrel.

The Benelli Nova or Benelli Supernova also look interesting but seems to only have a magazine capacity of 4, maybe if i can find a tube extension, would be a good option for first shotgun. I like the functionality of being able to clear the chamber without empting out the magazine.

I would like a shotgun that will work for range shooting but that also could work for hunting or clay shooting in the case i get into this in the future. Thats why I thought the 3 barrel one would be ideal, but i havent found this deal other than cammo. Im also not sure how important will it to have a riffled barrel, or a barrel where i can attach different chokes.
My budget is between 400 and 800 dollars, maybe i could spend a bit more if its REALLY worth it but since is my first shotgun i wouldnt like to spend more than necesary and I would like as much mag capacity as possible.

Any of you can give me some advice or knows any good deal/ first shotgun options out there that are not in a cammo pattern?

Thanks for any advice that you can give me.

Cheers

Take some time to have a look at the Remington 870's as well. Lots of aftermarket for them and a solid gun. They also have bbl combos.

for pump I like 870's, for semi its Benelli, for over/under I have no preference, a lot of options with your budget. black spray paint can is a easy fix for camo.

Same situation here - looking into these two for my first SG.Second one is more or less Home Defence -first one seems more practical .Lets see what others have to say

I have a mossberg and love it. Would recommend it to anyone.

Don't get the 590a1 though. You want something with interchangeable chokes, and they don't have em.

If you have a use for a 2 or 3 barrel set, go for it, but before you spend the money ask yourself if you really need more than one barrel... You'll want a 28ish barrel with chokes for sure, but rifled barrels, turkey barrels, and 18" barrels with fixed cylinder bore are more application specific and you can do the same stuff with the 28" barrel it just might be less ideal.

Capacity is not a big deal either. 4 or 5 rounds in the tube is plenty - you generally need to plug it at 2rds for bird hunting anyways, and you only load 1 or 2 shells at a time on the trap/skeet ranges... Other than 3-gun type sports, shotgun capacity isn't important.

Nothing wrong with the 870 either, but i don't like the position of the slide release button on them. Zero experience with the benneli but those who own them like em. Personally I'd stick with the Rem or Mossy though.

Look at the Winchester SXP. Its the best pump shotgun I have ever owned. Would buy again for sure. They also have barrel combo deal as well. One 28" and one 18.5".

highly recommend the SXP to anyone

I second this. I got the Camp and Field SXP. 28 and 18.5 inch barrels, and 3 chokes. Basically gives you one gun you can use to try everything out. Its also one of the cheapest you can get. I paid 380+ tax for my combo.

That's a very fair price. A 500 or 870 will run basically $300, so you'd only be paying $80-100 for the 2nd barrel.

Thanks you all for your suggestions. Since im going for a budget option but that can work for several things, ive narrowed it down to these 2 options (Prices are final cost with tax and shipping if needed) plus I will be probably buying a +2 mag extension in the future:

Remington 870 Express - 3 Barrel Combo ($815 CAD):
-28" Vent ribbed with bead sight (Modified Choke)
-23" Rifled barrel with Cantivalier for mounting scope.
-20" With TRUGLOW fiber optics sights (X-Full Choke)

Remington 870 Express - 2 Barrel Combo ($700 CAD):
-28" Vent ribbed with bead sight (with 3 chokes: Improve Cylinder, Modified and Full Choke)
-18.5" Home defense barrel with bead sight. Fixed Cylinder bore (no chokes)

Can anyone give me some advice about these two options? I dont mind paying the difference, specially since I would be getting the rifled barrel with scope mount.

But im just wondering what is the difference between the 18.5" and the 20" barrels since this is the barrel that I will use the most (to go to the range and shoot at paper etc) until i get into skeet or hunting.
All i know is that the home defense barrel has no option to install chokes. And that the 20" is usually branded as turkey barrel. In the pictures it seems to have some sort of "external choke"

aaaaa.jpg

Is there any other difference between these 2 barrels that i should consider? Is the 20" barrel X-Full Choke removable? if so can i use the same chokes than the 28" barrel?

Any information you guys can give will be very helpfull, i havent been able to find much info online about these specific barrels and their functions/options.

Thanks

2 barrel combo, will fit for what you are looking to do and as others have said lots of options with an 870 for add ons. Bead sight is what you want.
18.5 barrel for plinking in the bush and your 28 for birds. If needed, you can pick up other chokes for it.
You will one day want a semi auto, so excellent start

Wouldn't the 20" barrel act the same way than the 18.5" if I remove the X-Full choke and install a cylinder choke? Plus I would have the option of installing any choke I want, plus having the Fiber Optic sights? Because the 18.5" doesnt accept any choke.

i personally like the wood furniture. and from what ive been reading, the rifled slug isnt that necessary. you can shoot slugs with a smooth bore too
