7x57, 280, 7x64?

Tried a 1 grain warmer load....still better than moa, and the chrony says 2885 fps.
Also tried some 140 Hunting Ballistic Tips over 100V, and they are flirting with
moa as well. Hard to complain about that....the barrel is quite slim.
Think I'll hunt the Accubond load this weekend. :) D.

Can anyone else offer some insight into velocities for handloaded 7x57s? I am seriously considering a rifle in this chambering right now but all factory loads are for old guns and I want to know what a modern action can take firing 120-140gr bullets, with the intent of dropping elk out to a good distance.
 
In a modern, strong action, the following velocities can be reached in most 24" barrelled 7x57. If you have a 22" barrel, knock 40 fps off these velocities.
Keep in mind that each rifle is a bit different, so variations may exist. But I have been playing with commercial 7x57s since the mid 70's, and this is what I
have observed.

120 grain: 3050
139/140 grain: 2950
150/154 grain: 2825
156/160 grain: 2725

My 7x57 Zastava Full Stock Carbine is a nicely balanced compact Deer rifle. Has a 20" barrel with generous free bore. I load the 175gr Sierra GameKing SBT at 2500 fps at near-maximum pressure. Fine accuracy.

Note that Speer Reloading Manual No.11 mentions to limit load pressure to 46,000 cup in Mauser 93 and 95 rifles.

Why not? said:
140 Partitions can be loaded to well beyond 2900 fps, 160s past 2700, and 175s to more than 2500..... in modern bolt action rifle and single shots.

I concur with all of the above.
 
I had a Ruger #1 AB in 7x57 [I know, I know, should be slapped for selling it]
It had a 22" barrel, and we chronographed the 150 Partition out of it at 3005
average for 5 shots, using IMR 4831, Brass stood up well, and primer pockets
did not loosen any over 5 reloads. This was an exceptional barrel...fast with everything. D.

IB's are a different animal. They are a bonded bullet and have performed flawlessly every time I have used them. I shoot them in .257 Roberts (100g), 6.5X55 (129g), 7X57 (154g), .308 (150g), and .30/06 (165g).

Much appreciated. The one I'm looking at has a 24" barrel so those velocities are sounding quite nice. How's recoil compared to a .308? I've heard it's very tame.
 
Well gents, since I have a beautiful husky 4100 in 7x57......I think I'll have to go 7x64 on this one. Damn you Hoyt!!!!

Amazing muzzle speed for a 150gr bullet from a 7x57 !

My No.1 rifles can digest maximum loads without any signs of excessive pressure. The designer of the rifle purportedly never did succeed at blowing apart the action with extreme pressure loads - the barrel sheared off first. :eek:
 
Well, as I read you have a 9.3x62 and can assure you that 7x64 compliments it well!

Not much difference practically so pick the one you like
