I had posted about a Sako 85 or Fierce rifle being the ultimate mountain rifle, but Which Caliber? weight, reliable feeding and trajectory all being considered? what would you choose and why? I am open to anything, as long as it feeds well and is in .277 or .284 cal.
My favorite would be a short action 7mm, but without cutting a new chamber I am stuck with the three mentioned in the title. I may get a 7mm Rem and have it rechambered to .284win or 7WSM. Or is the 28 nosler here to stay and worth the weight?
Is the Medium/Standard/06 action lighter than the Short Action Magnum? I'm really put a lot of effort into being able to shoot a rifle well, and want to get the most out of this purchase. The rifle is going to be mostly used for goats and sheep.
Thanks guys/gals.

If you have yet to lean towards something different then the 7mm WSM would be a good choice... It shoots like a 7mmRM but is more efficient and uses less powder. So perhaps indicating a tad less recoil. Great for long shots and there is a video on Youtube that demonstrates these two fine cartridges. The 7mmWSM deserves far more attention then it has been given.

I totally agree. The .284 Win, 7WSM, 7SAUM, 280 AI. All do the same thing as the 7rem mag, but more efficiently and with shorter barrels. Its as shame that they don't chamber factory guns in these anymore. I know browning has in the past, but I'm just not much of a browning fan.

You can't buy a 7 RM (LA) and rechamber to .284 or 7 WSM (SA), as they won't clean up the RM chamber.

Just buy a new barrel and chamber it the way you want... you can also dictate the length, profile and twist this way... or buy a rifle already chambered in the cartridge of your choice. I have a Ruger KM77R MKII in 7mm WSM and like the cartridge alot... a 7mm WSM woukd make a perfect sheep/goat rifle.

It's fun to split hairs but when you're comparing similar cartridges it's mostly for the entertainment factor. Do you want to do the same thing the easy way or the hard way? There more entertainment in the hard way, but there's little else going for it.

I wanted a peppy 7 mil in a stainless Ruger M77 MKII, but rabidly disliked the 24" & 26" heavy mag-contoured barrels, I wanted a standard contour 22" barrel. I would have loved a stainless 7X57, but Ruger never made one... I debated on making myself a short action 7 mil, but then discovered that Ruger had done a run of the WSM's, until they gave it up due to licencing costs... so I started peeking around for one, less than 12 months later, bingo... "easy."

Closest I can come is, ;) a Lipsey Ruger full wood/stainless model in 7x57 :) .

Thought your son was packing that one?

Angus gave up on you and ordered one from the new run that are stamped .275 Rigby... I am still considering one of the 6.5 CM RSI's.

As far as cartridge design, the WSM and Rsaum are at the top, never had one but the remington short mag is probably the better of the two due to the longer neck. Not sure if you reload but the short mags are extremely easy to tune. But brass has been a problem for the last couple years. 270wsm not so much, been seeing a new winchester run in stores lately.

I love my 280 AI. Mine is a 24" 9 1/2 twist and I have shot up to a 162 ELD-X with good results. I'm now going to drop down to a 145 barnes LRX and mainly use it for my deer rifle as I bought a 300 win mag. I see the Fierce edge has a 24" 9 twist, is that the one your are looking at?

The WSM operates at higher pressures (65,000 vs 61,000 PSI) to achieve similar results. There is no magic in this - slightly less cartridge capacity, similar amount of powder due to higher pressure limits = similar performance)

For example, looking at Berger's data for the 175gr EOL

WSM
N560 63.9gr 2904fps
7828SSC 63.6gr 2897fps
MRP 63.7gr 2902fps
Magnum 68.5gr 2866fps

7mm RM
N560 63.5gr 2914fps
7828SSC 63.2gr 2905fps
MRP 63.7gr 2912fps
Magnum 68.2gr 2875fps

As Dogleg said, there is an easy way and not so easy way.

Young son is left handed so he ;) 'acquired' my 1895 Marlin GS 45-70. I think I mentioned a while back, the Lipsey will be my :) Vancouver Island Deer rifle.

Sorry. I had meant to say that I could purchase a 7-08 and rechamber it.

ruby 76, I hadn't got to looking into the barrel twists. Just trying to decide on caliber. I think a 1;9 would be fine in 280AI though as it would spin anything up to 180's.

What does it for you....$4 brass?

I know what mine does for me; 168s at 3300, 175 ABLRs at 175 and 195 grain EOL Bergers at 3068 fps at basically a brass preserving idle. Its a better STW than the STW is, and reaches the lands with a magnum length magazine even though Nosler screwed up that part. Price of brass is best handled by buying factory ammo for 80 bucks a box, then it only feels like its 2 bucks a brass, or maybe only 1. Feelings are so subjective so its hard to say.

No, I'm not suggesting we talk about our feelings.

Easy as falling down a well, though maybe in slow motion in this case.
