Opinions about Norinco jw15a-13 vs Stevens 300f

The JW15A ....bolt throw is high and won't clear the eyepiece of some scopes. ...

A little work with a grinder and cold blue on the bolt handle will take care of any interference. then you can mount anything you want within reason. hey... it's a norinco.

The same is true for CZ452 and CZ455 in regards to the ring height, however using a scope with a smaller eye box helps in regards to ring height. The JW15A is a CZ452 clone and is nearest to the CZ452 Scout in size

I had a EM-322, which is also, I believe, a CZ clone. I had a 6-24X50 mounted on it. The scope was a tad high. I could/should have used a cheek riser, but it still did the job just fine out to 100 yards, so I was happy.

Close, I think the EM322 is the 'sporter' version of the NS522, which is an Anschutz copy. Very accurate guns after some trigger work!

I have been thinking of buying a JW15A for awhile now, but the problem I keep come up with is in finding a compact scope and rings which are proportionally priced to the cost of the rifle

That it was.

I have both, the JW15 and the EM322. Both shoot great, but the EM322 was finished way better, and my trigger was perfect, light and crisp right out of the box. Mags are more finicky than the JW, and it hates feeding Winchester ammo.

It's my understanding that it is not so much a copy of the Anschutz, as the Chinese have bought the tooling for that model from Anschutz; which would make it a Chinese built Anschutz, not a clone. I wish it came with a longer barrel.

it was very well made, on all points. As a matter of fact, its finish and wood were better than pretty much any American-made mass-market .22 i've seen in the last 20 years. Nice deep blue, nice wood, good finish.

Mine is the newer EM 332A, sorry, with the synthetic thumb-hole stock.

Looks like this:

And yes, amazing fit and finish. Stock needed bedded though.

Interesting read! Keep an eye out for one of the NS522's, they have a beautiful hammer forged barrel, and super easy to modify.

Do not ever permanently modify(damage) a gun to fit a specific scope...Get a scope that fits...taller rings...anything but grinding away...That's so "BUBBA"...

I'm inclined to agree. Besides...you end-up with a more diverse selection of unused scope rings as a side benefit. :)

Thanks for the laugh guys.

So.... if I want to mount a scope on a 1896 Mauser, I should use high rings? Do they make them that high? Or would it be okay to cut and reweld the bolt handle?

Would that be okay with you guys? It's happened many times to 1896 Mausers and they are better guns for it. Now that's on a Mauser, here we're talking about a lowly Norc, with crap open sights and a bolt handle that likes to bump scopes mounted at a nice height. Basically, the Norc's best friends are the file and sandpaper. I just went next level.

Looking at the thing itself, the bolt now clears the scope, which was the objective (sorry)

here's a closeup of my "work", I really should go back and clean up the ugly lug on the left. The clever eye may note the mill work, but it wasn't quite enough I found out when I got home, so the grinder had to finish the fitting. I felt bad grinding it, if that helps. Ok, no, I didn't.

But you know, the cz bolt handle is a very different animal. consider the side by side view, clone on left, original on right

Looks to me like the Norinco folks took some liberties when cloning the bolt. They definitely left some flab on their bolt handle, and got the angle wrong to boot. Maybe a bit more grinding, or a heat and beat, is in order (on the norc, don't worry)

Here's a shot at a different angle to show the angle difference and the extra lumps on the Norc bolt

So I stand by my decision to grind the handle down so that my ridiculous scope that was lying around could fit in my cheapie mounts, so that the Norc can be the best it can be. Personally, I hate having a scope any higher than necessary. And sometimes, extreme measures need to be taken. Now if I had a milling machine, in my defence I say I would have milled it (because I'm a purist too!), but alas....

You can get the high rings for yours if you like and leave the grinding to the foolish. I won't slag you for it.

Here she is, ready to go:

I put an ordinary Bushnell 4x32mm scope on mine...low or medium rings...cant remember, fits fine. No BUBBA required!. Its a compact rifle, deserving a compact scope. Just saying!

Did the same thing..just mounted a Bushnel 4x32 and it fits fine and does the job it was intended for , a untilitarian compact 'carry rifle' .When they first came out I knew it was exactly what I had been looking for -nothing fancy or expensive but reliable ,accurate , bolt action,5 round magazine and I wasn't disapointed. The main complaint seemed to be the factory sights, but I have to use a scope anyway and the fixed 4x 32 Bushnell is all I need

I own both rifles.

The JW15A took a lot of cleaning to get all the grease off. I got rid of the iron sights and mounted a scope. It's a two stage trigger and mine is set to 2.25 pounds (confirmed with a borrowed trigger pull gauge). Clearly they don't have to worry about lawyers and lawsuits in China. My rifle is a tack driver and I have only used CCI Quiets through it. My intent was to have a rifle for using around the farm and close distances using subsonic ammunition. My only complain is the bolt and safety are a little stiff and my 11 year old son has some issues with it. I removed the front sling swivel and replaced it with a regular sling stud for putting on a bipod. It has dovetail mounts which I am not a big fan of. I have a dovetail to weaver adapter and a cheap 4X power scope mounted on it.

The Stevens 300 has a smoother bolt. You can also work the bolt with the safety is on. This was one of the main reasons why I bought this rifle for my kids. The trigger is very heavy. I didn't get a chance to test it but I'm guessing it's 8 pounds. I have a Rifle Basix trigger on the way. It is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. I have a Burris 2-7X mounted on the rifle and use Winchester white box ammo.

If I had to choose between the two rifles I would pick the Norinco. I really like the trigger and considering the price of the rifle the quality is pretty good where it matters. It's a bit crude in some places and has an unfinished quality. I don't care if it's "pretty." I am actually very tempted to buy a second Norinco and turn it into a longer distance rifle using higher velocity ammunition. Boyd's makes aftermarket stocks if one wants to go that route.
