Shotgun Finish Question

Hi all. So, I recently picked up a single shot 12ga that was sanded down to bare metal. After that, I have no idea if it had been topcoated or such. I wanted it as a winter project, but have now decided to keep it the way I got it. The question is though, is there a best way to sand and preserve the bare metal on this gun? Sanding, polishing, etc. It is not stainless steel, and would like to try and get it to look as such. Would a polish protect the metal from the elements? Or overall, would it be best for the gun to be blued, or in my case, I want to try a BBQ paint on it. Thank you.

You can paste wax it for rust protection but it would need to be retreated every so often. You could clear-coat it? I'm sure someone here has a better option. :p

Good suggestions. Clear lacquer or a paste wax. I use Renaissance Wax on the metal and wood. Also helps protect case colour hardening.

Good. Thanks for the help. I have some reading to now do. I am hoping to keep the look as it does indeed look nice.
