Opinions on the Ruger GSR 16" .308

Convinced myself I "need" a Ruger GSR.

Looking at the models available I'm going with the stainless .308 16" laminate.

Seems this model is exclusive to certain distributer... but that's what I'm looking for.

Anyone have a 16" .308? Or would the 18" be preferred?


Would it be worth it to nitrate the whole gun?
 
I have the blued/laminate, took off the flash hider and put on a thread protector.
Tried the XS rail but liked the Ruger forward rail/Hi-Lux 2-7 better.
I shoot mainly 200gr cast in it.
I like it a lot, it fits me,I have been able to shoot it off hand with a lot of success.
For off hand shooting I find the 3 shot mag works very well.
I find it a very comfortable and easy pointing rifle.
Will not be selling mine.
 
I hunt with my 16.1 inch model(blued/synthetic stock), took down 4 game animals (3 deer, 1 bear) with it so far in the past year. It has a burris 2x7 scout scope on it.

It is approximately 7lbs with the scope.

So it is easily my favorite rifle.

But whats not to like, fast in the hand, mag fed, accurate, light and powerful... can't ask for much more.
 
I've owned the blued/laminate 16.1" and currently have an 18" stainless/laminate. I much prefer the 18" because I don't need a threaded barrel and any extra barrel at that length helps with velocity and muzzle flash, (plus the 18" looks better IMO).

Hands down my favorite all-round rifle to date, be sure to get a poly 3 or 5 round mag. Shoots everything from 125gr to 220gr accurately. The Iron sights are excellent and allow me to ring the 24" gong at 300y with ease.
 
urgh.... that clunky Ruger laminate stock, and it's an ugly gun.

But, I like the concept overall. Probably would put a red dot on it.

I'd go with the 16.5" since I already have a couple 18.5" set up kinda like this of a different brand.

A better synthetic stock, smaller mag and better flash hider this Ruger would be nice. But to change all that out cost wise it looses it's appeal to me.
 
I never liked the scout concepts, until I used one. Now own both a 18.7" 308 and a 16.1" 223 in the Ruger m77 GSR. Love them!

My buddy has the 16.1" 308, not much difference between them but 100 fps MV.
 
Owned one briefly. Needed a gunsmith to make it work right. Shot well enough after. Like the "idea" of the scout concept. In practice i never warmed up to the scout scope arrangement and found it to be a hindrance for long shots and low light (even though i used a Savage Scout to harvest a deer at the longest distance i have ever taken an animal).

I added an XS rail, with the intent to add a 1-6x or similar low powered variable, but at the end of the day, i traded it for a R700, there were just so many options for that platform, that i could get exactly what i wanted, without the compromise.
 
Would be nice if they came out with one in 358winchester. Even better would be a barrel combo for 308, 358 and varmint round(22-250)
 
I have a stainless walnut in 308 and a blue lam 223. I like them both, quick to steady off hand or impromptu rest. Very short for long walks.

I've been thinking that myself. Only thing holding me back from paying full retail and taxes for it.

I have a Marlin SBL 45/70 in a scout set-up with a fixed 2.5x Leupold IER scope. I learned to like the scout concept, but the 45/70 is overkill for "everyday" use. It has a specific role. That's why I'm looking into a .308 scout type rifle... I do already have a tang safety M77 18" RSI in .308... but, you know. Box mag and ghost ring sights :)

As for it's looks... I'm not one for fancy wood or gaudy engravings. Utilitarian and functional... so it floats my boat ;)

My reasoning for wanting the shortest barrel is to keep the forward weight down as much as possible because of the forward mounted scope.

ugly utility piece, it's what the Enfield Jungle Carbine should of been. Best rifle on the market these days for 95% of shooting needs
 
Would be 8lbs scoped and loaded. Not exactly a lightweight for a 16" bbl and would be bummer to carry in one hand with that mondo (looks tactical, pinned to 5) magazine.

I'd rather have a nice little Model Seven CDL in 308 topped with a VX2 2-7. It would be lighter, easier to carry and not so hard on the eyes.

On the contrary, one of the things I like about the scout (w/3 round mag) is how nice it does carry 1 handed. A thumb under the scope and fingers under the mag is quite comfortable.

The 10 round mag is 10 rounds, no pins. I prefer the 3 rounder.

But, to each their own, I'm found of the utilitarian look.




Now if I could just get a Ruger Guide Gun in 35 Whelen...... ;)
