Cleaning 5/30 PMags

Ya kinda figured it was not doable ... I've just got into the AR world and have bought a number of used pmags off EE and wanted to give them a good once over. I'll just do the compressed air thing. Thanks gents.
 
I just use an old toothbrush. Remove base and spring, push follower down to the rivet, use the toothbrush to clean around the top part of the inside of the mag. Flip upside down, follower to the top of the mag, clean the bottom part with toothbrush. Then I blow out the crud with my compressor and blower attachment. Reassemble mag and I'm good to go.

An ultrasonic cleaner can be had for around $200.00 and it can be used to clean many things including gun parts, jewellery, dentures, ornaments and the list goes on.

Just tell the wife she has her shoes or purses or whatever crap she collects and tell her to leave your crap alone. You shouldn't have to justify anything to her as long as the bills are getting paid before you buy your tools. Time to take your marbles back and be the man of the house.

I haven't cleaned a magazine in years, they must be self cleaning or maybe it's just that I don't throw them in the mud. They've been 100% reliable so far without any maintenance after years of use, I use p-mags for at least 90% of my shooting by the way.

If you really want to get them completely apart just carefully remove the rivet and clean it then replace the rivet. Just be careful if you're using a polymer mag, if you drill or grind the rivet it will get hot and melt the hole so you have to go slow. When selecting the rivet you are going to install I would buy aluminum rivets and make sure they're long enough to block the follower but short enough the spring doesn't get caught on it.
Don't worry about the SWAT team kicking in your door for removing the rivet, there is no alarm built into them so no one but you will know that you've just done some maintenance on your magazine, just don't take it out of your house until you've replaced it.
I've taken them apart before to fix a crappy rivet job by the importer and also to shave the follower a tiny bit to allow insertion on a closed bolt if the mag was originally pinned to a tight 5 rounds instead of a nice 5.5 rounds.
