Opinions on the Ruger GSR 16" .308

I have the 16. I've hunted with it for two years now. It's fantastic in tight brush. Nice and short, very maneuverable. That said, I'm a bow hunter and can't seem to get over inching closer and closer. So a nice short rifle is great for me, I find it just as accurate as my Weatherby was. I bought it used, unfired, with the xs rail and a leupold 4x scout scope on it. The polymer mags are very nice.

Excellent rifle, pained me to sell it but wanted something better for bear country. I keep wanting to pick up another but the price is a bit outrageous right now.

Echoing others who say Ruger needs to make a variant in 358. The 450 Bushmaster version is interesting but can't really get a good read on that rounds capabilities.

The guide gun sort of fills that bucket in their line up. Too bad about the non-detachable magazine, and stock colour though.

Yup, I actually went with a guide gun in 338 wm. Added a custom scout rail, cerakote and glass bed + trigger job.

Would like to have a box mag but the blind mag worked ok this season.

Doesn't feel quite as fast pointing with a 20 inch barrel but it will have to do.

That sounds like an awesome rig, do you have any pictures? I am having the same argument in my head about my next rifle purchase, changing from the box mag of the GSR to a blind mag in another...

I carry my Scout often in grizzly country. Six round mag full of 200 grainers @ 2450 fps will keep them at bay

I agree with Tod..... although I also understand supercub’s opinion.....

The three round mag is an absolute must.... the ten rounder is an absolute abomination.... and fully loaded, it makes the rifle unnecessarily heavy...... but I do love having it just for range testing.....

My only concern with the rifle is the 10round mag, NOT on the overall appearance of the rifle. I think it looks fine and would be a great rig with a 3 rounder. I've often looked that the similar Guide Guns line up and thought I'd like to own one in a 338 or 375. be a great moose rifle. A 35Whelen or 9.3x62 would be cool as well.

First thing I did with both my Ruger GSR's is put the metal ten rounders on the EE. In the 308 I really like the Magpul 5 round AICS mags which hold 6 rounds with a 2 second mod. Ruger now makes a polymer 10 round for the 223 which is a lot lighter, quieter, and doesn't hang out of the rifle as far as the steel mags. I'd like to see a 4-6 round polymer mag for the 223

You must handload 200 gr 308 rounds? I'm not able to handload so this unfortunately isn't an option.

Here is an image from a while ago. Might consider a canted red dot as well along the scout scope. Now todbartell has me wanting another scout tho....

220gr Factory Hornady RN

2310fps from my 18" scout and group 1.25" @ 100y

the Hornady 220gr load is probably not very common to find, but they're out there. I can supply that load if you're interested. To be honest, any premium 180gr bullet will do well. Federal loads 180gr Nosler Partitions. I like to carry the Ruger Scout when I'm hiking or camping. It's nice and compact, fits in and out of the tent easily, and is rugged and reliable. I remove any optic and use the ghost ring sight

Took a 4 point buck on Wednesday with my 18 inch ruger scout. First deer with this rifle. Had a 3-9 x40 weaver on it and made one double lung shot at 325 yards. Shooting 165 grain Hornady factory. Was resting the rifle on a bipod ontop of a hill. Couldn’t be happier with this rifle. Very versatile. Can take the scope off and throw on a red dot or put the ghost ring back on if hunting bush. Definitely my new go to rifle.

I caved and bought a 16.1 stainless .308 synthetic...

It's "clubby" without a scope. It balances nicley once you put a forward mounted scope on it.

Bolt needs a good working in. Might havI to sit on the couch and work it.

What store did you buy it from?

I'm running a 308 16" barrel M700 this year and the Ruger Scout in 16" has caught my attention.
