Explain Barrel Length To Me

I'm more interested in increasing capacity and a barrel not a ridiculous 28 inches. So I'm thinking +3 extension with an 18" barrel. I gotta figure the measurements, but I think that's the way I'm leaning.

A plus 3 extension will extend about 1.5 inches past the barrel...I have one on my 18" 870 police. A plus 2 lines up very nicely. Depends on what you want...I have both set-ups.

Hmm. Thanks for the info. I was really hoping for a plus 3, but I don't like the look of the extension passing the barrel. That shouldn't really matter, but since this is a range-toy setup, I figure I can justify form over function.

If you cut a factory shotgun barrel to less than 18", it becomes prohibited, regardless of the overall length of the shotgun.

https://nfa.ca/legal-issue/barrel-and-firearms-lengths/

CC s. 84(1) “prohibited firearm” (d): If the barrel has been SHORTENED to less than 18″/457mm, after leaving the factory, “by sawing, cutting or ANY other alteration or modification” that forces the firearm into the “prohibited firearm” class.

You are correct. I have edited my error.

However the NFA description contains a syntax error that is misleading. It is the whole firearm that is subject to the prohibition on cutting sawing or any other modification, not just the barrel. The distinction is important because if it was the barrel that was subject to the prohibition, then substituting the barrel for another one would be perfectly legal, as you are not cutting sawing or modifying the factory barrel.

However it is the total firearm in its factory condition that must not be sawn, cut or modified... there any modifications to the FIREARM, including swapping factory barrel for factory barrel, must ensure the modified firearm is more than 600mm AND has a barrel of at least 457mm.

Interestingly, if you had a pump shotgun with a 30" barrel and a telescoping stock, it would be NR. If you fit it with a perfectly legal 12" barrel, and the resulting firearm can be fired with an overall length of less than 660mm, it would seem that such a firearm would be both prohibited AND restricted.

Is a barrel of 19.3 inches still non restricted ?

Barrel length is only one factory affecting class of a firearm.
Is it full auto? Was it ever full auto?
Is it a variant or modified version of a named prohib/restrict?
Can it fire when OAL is reduced below 660mm by folding/telescoping?
Did you or anyone else modify it so OAL is below 660mm
Is it a handgun?
If all of the above can be answered NO than it might be NR.

A Garand tanker with a barrel length of 18.25 inches restricted ?
