remington 700 carbine?

I was surprised with a recent purchase of an early Remington 700 that has what appears to be a factory 20" barrel, open sights still intact. It is nice compact rifle that feels like a model seven to handle. From what I can gather from the barrel code it is a 1963 mfgr date. does anyone know any history of this little carbine? I cant seem to find much info on the web.
 
Love the 700 and would be awesome to have a carbine version. Not sure if they made them in 18.5" but that would be even cooler imo.

I have owned a few of those early production Carbines. All had 20" barrels. Two were in 30-06, and I shot a lot of game with them.
Quite handy, and very well made. Accurate as anything. D.
 
Know about em but never handled one. OP's correct, little on the net about them that I could find.

Years ago had Tac-Ord build me two smoking Mohawk 600's as bush guns, both 18.5". Killer guns, extremely handy. Always wanted a 700 carbine in .308.

Didn't know about the brazed on front sight, thanks for the info GunTech.
 
I see a fellow nutter on the EE is looking for one of the "1963 700's that all came with 20" barrels that year" ,if that statement is true its pretty cool history. I have an email into Remington to see what they can tell me.
 
My '63 also has a notch milled into the back of the action that I'm not sure about, the 721/725 have this as well and was apparently on all the 700's up to '69. looks like it might accommodate a stripper clip or something??
another thing ive noticed is that the action is not as smooth as newer 700's , working the bolt feels a bit klunky.
Also the barrel seems to taper down towards the muzzle, somewhere between a standard and MTN contour profile
 
The early 700s did not have the anti-bind groove on the bolt head.
I suppose that the cut in the rear bridge allowed rounds to be loaded straight down, instead of in and back. Don't know if Remington made M700 National Match rifles cut for charger loading; Winchester did.

For a stripper clip is correct.
 
As noted earlier the first M700's came with 20" barrels. They were not referred to as "carbines". I believe sales were lower than expected due to the short barrel and didn't improve until they were lengthened.

would love to see some pics of these older rifles with the iron sights and 20 inch barrels. Embarking on a rem700 build right now and plan is to end up with a 19", krieger barrelled .338federal in an MDT Lss chassis. I want it to have back up irons.... hooded front if possible. Been looking at pics on google for days trying to find a set of sights for the build LOL

That 30-06 was promised to a young guy I work with before I even got it. I was sorry for that once I had the rifle in hand so had a similar one built on an old ADL 243 rebarreled with a 20" 308 bbl. I like it.
