How can I find public land in Quebec? Specifically, between Gaspe/Eastern Townships

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if there's an internet resource that lays out Crown land boundaries in Quebec, specifically in the area between Rt. 204 and Rt. 299 south of the St. Lawrence River (just north of Quebec).

I'm wondering for the purposes of moose hunting next year ...

Forget it for moose. Anything crown will be occupied and if you try you will be met with trouble. Google "guerre des bois" you'll see what i mean. There are maps from macarte.ca or trakmaps and there are moose habitat maps that Michel Breton assisted in making that I can vouch are great tools. You are better off to go north. There are many places that are free of people. Moose density might be lower but you will have a greater area to hunt. The maps from michel Breton have overlays of zecs, outfitters with exclusive rights, parks and wildlife reserves so you will know where you are allowed to hunt. You cant just wander onto a zec or park. I have been looking into this for a few years now. You can also look for hunting camps in kijiji or lespac. Some are cheap and have established territories that people have hunted for years that you can hunt without any hassle.
Good luck pm if you like I may be able to help more

Better yet... drive, scout, knock... privately land avoids the crowds.

I have a lot of relatives in the Gaspe area, but alas, not in moose country, and asking for private permission is tough when most private moose land is owned by other people. Not so easy as it is with deer and bear.

Makes it even harder when you don't speak the same language ...

I'm somewhat familiar with the guerre des bois scene. I used to commercial fish in Tadoessac every spring, and everyone on the boat was a moose hunter. One of them weas Jason Tremblay Morneau, that guy whose video went the rounds on Facebook, where he hides behind a tree and jumps out and smacks a moose on the antler. He's a very well-known and highly capable moose hunter, and if he had the time, he'd take me.

Trouble is that during moose season, he's mostly busy with paying clients, and I can't afford to compete with those rates.

I'm looking at that specific area because it's just north of where my friends already hunt, in New Brunswick. From what I understand, there's no shortage of moose or space to shoot them there, but not being familiar with Quebec's property laws, I don't want to get into a position where I shot a moose I wasn't supposed to.

you want a moose but do no want to drive and compete with locals ... only chance will be to drawn under SEPAQ and find a team to go with.

look for ZECs that is another option.

i lived in Quebec and despite not speaking the same french i was able to hunt in Charlevois and on ZECs.

Well the maps i mention will show you exactly where the crown/private limits are. You need at least 2 permits for a moose in Quebec so you will need a partner. Gearing up isnt that bad with 2 guys. I can tell you that there is lots of competition on the NB/ QC border on crown land.

Any easy access points will have exactly the kind of people you will want to avoid so getting off the beaten path is the best option. Those maps i mentioned are extremely valuable tools

Yeah, I have a couple guys who'd be interested in going. I'd probably pay for their licence and they'd just come along as backup muscle, probably.

We'll see. Can't probably pull it off next Sept., with kids keeping me particularly busy next year, but I think I'll at least try to start scouting some areas on motorcycle trips this year. I have bikes well-suited to riding those areas.

Good to know there's lots of competition there too. Maybe just look further north. We'll see.

I hunt moose in Gaspésie . I don't think you will be able to find non occupied public land on the south shore of the st- lawrence river. It is crowded and some hunter are willing to fight to keep " their" piece of public land. If I was you, I would apply to the lottery to hunt on the sepaq parks.
