A 10TR doesn't need a chassis right away. I think his point was more that a 10TR with a chassis is still cheaper than a Ruger RPR and then you actually get to pick your chassis.
 
Can't beat the 10tr for the price and for what you get. One of the best bangs for the buck on the market today. Or you can spend 4 to 500 more for a entry level R.E.M. 700 sps varmint.

The only difference that I could find is that the 10 FCP-SR has a fluted barrel for the extra $200. Not sure whats the big deal on that. I just bought the Savage 10TR

Indeed. There's guys shooting 16" .308 barrels to 1000m accurately.

I can't even imagine owing a .308 over 22".

24" would be the absolute max and pushing it to me. It's just not necessary for the round in most applications. F-class is a different matter.

I've shot a 20" out past 1200 yards as well. Funny thing though is that my 26" barrel does it pushing the rounds much faster without running hot loads. Can you shoot far with a 20", or 16", sure, but if that is your main aim, then why not run a longer barrel and get some more velocity? The only benefit that I can see to a shorter bolt gun is movement in and out of vehicles or hunting in tight brush, neither of which I think are on the agenda here. And before you say, but they're heavier, I've shot plenty of 2-day field matches with mine, hiking over many miles and carrying a heavy load. If the extra weight of the longer barrel makes it impossible for you to get your rifle where it needs to be, you've got other issues.

Add me to the list of 20" .308 shooters reaching out to 1000m. Have not put my loads on paper but if I can read the wind, consistent hits on a 2MOA plate are no problem. 168 BTHP going fast but loaded under Hodgdon published max.

Savage has more features out-of-the-box than Remington for less money. Personally, I don't have much interest in the RPR.
 
Well I got the Savage 10 TR in .308 from SFRC on their amazing preblack friday sale. Now the hardest part I think. Finding an optic for a reasonable price that wont destroy my already ruined student bank account just before Christmas. Thanks for all the great points so far.
 
+1 on the Elite Tactical series from Bushnell. Clear, bright and come with target turrets.

If you can get by without weather sealed target turrets, I actually really like Nikon glass. I had a Prostaff 3-9x40 and the glass in that scope was clearer and brighter than my many-times more expensive Bushnell. Other than the exposed target turrets, a mildot Nikon scope would be practically the same scope with better glass.
