Well with 9 days till close I cut my white tail buck tag, the season has been a good one and I couldn't be happier with how it went. Between my wife and I we have three WT in the freezer, we both got does and now this buck.
I have access to private family land close by my inlaws have and I have been keeping an eye on a trail cam I've had out since the spring, lots of buck activity the last couple weeks. A couple real big monster bucks coming through prompted me to keep the apples and alfalfa flakes restocked daily, any action caught was well after dark from 6pm-4:30am with no daytime activity for a shot. After a week and a half of pre dawn and late day till dark sitting I finally started seeing day visits on the camera, this spike buck was a reg visiter to the apples during daylight hours. The day prior to shooting him he showed up three separate ocasions to feed.
I got set up in the woods before dawn and waited a few hours, no visits. Went home to take care of some chores and had a coffee, was back out in the woods 70-80yrds back by 10:30am. He came in an hour later, I was in low spot and while I tried to get into a kneel to take a shot he heard me and bolted. I moved into a better closer position 40yrds out and settled in as it started raining to wait awhile, wasnt sure if he would come back but he loved the apples so I figured he might get greedy. Around 1:20pm he crept back in and started to feed again, I was all ready and raised my rifle and waited till he raised his head and took the shot. Hit him at a slight angle in the chest in front of the leg and it hit the heart, lungs and exited through the opposite leg. He made it 50-60 yards into the bush and that's where I found him laying. Felt pretty good to have him down after I spooked him, especially after watching him for a good week on my trail cam.
This was a great first deer season for me, I learned a lot. Some of it on CGN from all the hunting stories posted and a bunch more from what I thought might work while scouting in the bush and watching deer in the areas I frequent. Hope everyone else's season has been as enjoyable as mine has been, now to find some snowshoe hare spots to hunt over the winter.
Some of his trail cam appearances, he was all over the apple pile. Once he started showing around noon I knew I had a chance of getting a shot on him.
