What shotgun are you running?

Hello competitors,

I've had a little taste of 3 gun a few weeks ago and thanks to the kind gentlemen who was willing to teach me and let me use his shotgun, I was able to finish my first match that's packed with fun. And the fun lingers on...

I want to be a little more invested in this sport and trying not to be the guy without a shotgun next year.

I did some research, and I know Remington Versamax, Benelli M2, Beretta 1301, and Browning A5 are some of the popular choices. But everything I'm able to find was at least 2 years old. Hence, I'm here asking what shotguns are you all running?
 
A buddy uses the Stoeger M3000. You can ghost load it, very reliable but has a weird cycle and unloading feature that I found overly complicated. I used a Mossberg 500 pump at my first 3Gun and it was fine. I would prefer a semi for my next time though.
 
I run a Mossberg 930 JMPRO, with a marine spacer tube from OR3GUN

Pros:
- Price
- Easy controls to master
- Easy to strip for cleaning
- Comes 90% ready for 3 gun
- Recoil impulse is very smooth compared to other semi autos

Cons:
- Can be picky with ammo (no white box winchester)
- Almost zero aftermarket parts available
- Needs some mods to enhance reliability in the wet (marine spacer tube from OR3GUN)
- Everyone with a Tacord Versa max looks down their nose at you (but secretly enjoys shooting it)
 
I picked up a Beretta 1301 Comp this summer and slowly building a 3gun rig. I've run most stuff out of it without any hiccups. Added an extension tube to get 5.9 3" shells loaded. Ghost loading is a little tricky but once you do it a few times, it's easy. Folks pointed out that the same bolt release button can be accidentally pressed the wrong way and cause a double feed and malfunction. I can't say it won't ever happen but I've yet to accidentally induce a double feed. You seriously need to rock that bolt release backwards to dump the mag and if you're doing that, you probably aren't familiar enough with the shotgun to be running it in competition. Heck, it initially had me so worried I ordered that little shim to prevent accidentally pressing the bolt release incorrectly but I shot it a bit and did numerous drills while waiting for the shim to arrive and not once induced a malfunction.

The cons, serial number right above the beveled out loading port restricts how much more you can open it up for faster reloading. I read that someone got the "Okay" from the CFO to relocate the serial number provided he take pictures of the actual serial number for his records before relocating it to another part of the receiver.

I want to buy only once, for now. So likely it will be one of the three: versamax, m2, 1301. I didn't know Tactical Ordnance does custom work on versax, I did a little big searching, and it looks beautiful. I wonder if they does magic on m2 as well.
 
Remington Versamax with the TacOrd treatment minus all the gawd awful tacky gold parts and a Briley ported extension
 
I ran a stock versamax with a mag extension this year. Loved it. I found that the longer barrel was more of an asset than a hindrance as well, at least for the type of matches they design here (steel knockdown targets, longish range slugs). Wouldn't go with a shorter barrel even if it were an option, I don't think.

I'm a machinist, and my current employer is firearms friendly, so I'll do most of the work that tacord does myself. Eventually, lol.

^^This^^ 1301 Comp in 21". Also had a TacOrd Versamax for a while. Both excellent. I preferred the 1301 because it is much lighter, downside being it has a little more kick but not as much as the Benelli M2. Also, I was able to buy an adapter to put a Magpul SGA stock on it, which IMO was a big upgrade, although I have only had time to run it in 1 match since. Also did some other mods the best being altering the lifter so it didn't pinch my thumb all the time. Very happy with it.

Remington Versamax tricked up by Casey B of TacOrd. Ready to race with all the bells and whistles. You get what you pay for.

I also have a JM Pro 930 but I tend to use my 26" Versamax.

I actually like the extra weight of my versamax (She's a heavy beast with the 28" barrel, extended mag tube loaded right up, and one chambered/ghost loaded). Easier follow up shots when targets are close together. Recoil with standard target loads is super soft. I'm a bit of a bigger guy, so holding up the extra weight doesn't bother me. Would definitely be an issue for smaller shooters.
 
Just got around to check the thread and got in touch with Casey at TacOrd. And it appears that he also does custom work on Benelli M2.

I see the remington versa max is getting most of the votes here, but I wonder why the M2 isn't getting any love. Let's say both M2 and versa max are touched by TacOrd and they are priced the similar (~$300 price difference), and you were to choose one, which one would you choose?

I would choose the Versamax because I like the 3.5" receiver on it, makes it easier to load and holds more rounds. Also, the Versamax has much less felt recoil than the Benelli.

Anything that runs smooth with a 3.5" chamber and ability to ghost load would be an advantage. The Benelli SBE fits that bill but the bolt needs slight modification to ghost load. A little welding. Also a replacement of the forked lifter or again a little welding. The earlier Versamax's set up for 3 gun had a 3" chamber while the sporting versions had a 3.5". You have to go with what it is advertised to determine if you can get that extra round in.

All Versamaxs have a 3.5” chamber. I won’t bother debating legalities as it has been discussed several times on here. I still prefer my 1301 though.

The new 1301s have relocated the serial # :cool:
