who hunts with 7.62 x 39 or the 6.5 Grendel?

I have a Sav 11 in 7.62x39 with a .308 bore. It shoots 130 gr Hornady's very well. Can be loaded to higher vel than an SKS will handle. Started playing with 150 gr bullets as well. Very similar to 30-30 performance. Certainly capable on deer to 150 yds and under the right conditions 200 yds would be doable. Great little gun for the Grandkids.

SKS, S&B soft points, Whitetail Deer, Sub 300 lb Game for hunting.

How does your SKS handle the S&B SP taking them out of the chamber when in/out of the stand etc??? I used Barnaul SP last year and I had to change out the chambered round because the SKS ate up the SP... this year I was out with a CZ527 with S&B sp. They aware accurate at the range and the rifle handled well but I did not have the opportunity to use it on game this yr.

Use this round for deer.... go bigger for Moose...

holy wow...

Thats great. I'm looking at an SKS right now from westrifle. Is scoping that much better than using the iron sights?

newb here

I am still working on scoping a SKS... so far it's proving a tough rifle to keep zero with. Got a polar scoped SKS from Westfield and while cool I'm still playing to keep it on zero. All the slide in covers are a waste of time. Doing it all over again if just leave the SKS with irons.

I installed a Williams FP on my SKS. D and T to the frame it was not too big of a job. Rifle shoots 123 PRVI round noses well enough to take deer to 150 yards. I do prefer to use shooting sticks or lean against a tree if possible. I had to cut the front sight hood into the AK configuration to raise the front pin up for the peep. The peep gives you all the windage adjustment you need and I use the front sight for elevation. Presently awaiting a Ruger Ranch in the 7.62x39 chambering. It should be a decent woods rifle for deer and CLOSE moose maybe.

An SKS loaded with 123gr (2350 fps MV) and 150gr (2100 fps MV) bullets has worked on Deer and Bighorn Sheep at ranges out to 250 meters. Proved that it has adequate power with proper shot placement. For larger game I think these loads only have marginal power at best at very close range so I'd be reluctant to try it.

However, my 7.62x39 Ruger No.1 can be safely loaded to well beyond standard ballistics. For example, a 180gr RN bullet does about 2150 fps (using propellant Z:p).

Moose hunting was a success this season so I'd like to give my 7.62x39 No.1 with 180gr RN bullets a try next season to see if I can drop a Bull Moose with it called in at close range. Should work with a broadside shot to take out the shoulder and spinal chord. At 50 meters it has the same power as a .30-06 at 200 meters.

What sort of velocity do you expect?

180gr at 2150 fps muzzle speed. The 7.62x39 Express load. ;)

Better than... uhhh... "Aaaaay...Beeeee?"

I know an old guy who shot a nice buck at close to 400 yards with a Winchester 94 .30/30 using the buckhorns... one shot at the base of the skull... I think we should all try that next weekend, eh, GH & Slamfire?

Can't. Sold my '94 a while back. :(

And don't have the freezer space anyhow. :)

6.5 Grendel loaded with a 123gr SST @ 2500 fps MV will reach 400y with 1900 fps / 990 ft-lbs of energy. Should be plenty to make that bullet expand and penetrate . A Barnes 100gr TTSX @ 2800 fps would hit 350y with 2020 fps / 900 ft lbs

The 6.8 SPC can't keep up. Grendel has 10% advantage in energy at the muzzle, and at 300 yards it's pushed that to 30%

I can load 150gr bullets at 2400+ fps in my 7.62x39 Ruger No.1. Retains 1041 ft-lbs at 400 yards with the Speer 155gr -

Not a recommendation of course, with my No.1 handloads definitely being on the warm side, but nothing like what this guy does  -

That's quite a load! :)

Splitting hairs when it comes to hunting distances... the 6.8spc does exactly what it was intended to do and 10% - 30% comparisons depends on what bullets your comparing.

I load 95gr TTSX that Barnes specifically designed for the 6.8 cartridge with a 2880fps muzzle velocity I'm good on deer out to 350 yards only because I don't shoot it further if I need a cartridge that does more I sure won't be going to a marginally increased performance cartridge I'll swap up to a far more capable cartridge...

Here is my SKS , “hunting rig” , Russian SKS , I cleaned and prepped the stock and painted it a sorta Arctic camo type thing. Bedded it and ensured tight stock fit. Free floated barrel as best I could in barrel channel ahead of receiver. Installed a magwedge Gen 2.5 scope mount/rail and put an inexpensive bushnell banner on top for scope. Not a great scope but decent , does the job. Upgraded springs in the trigger as well. Finally , a rubber butt pad installed for a little better LOP. As I said in previous post , federal fusion or prvi soft points in 7.62x39 is what I shoot/hunt with out of this rifle. Does the job on deer inside 100m just fine.

Many people put the 7.62x39 round in the same power category of the 30-30 which has taken lots of game. If it’s what I had, I’d use it ..... but with cheap used hunting rifles and cheap savage axis rifles etc .... I don’t see much need to use the 7.62x39.

I saw a documentary about living in Russia in the Siberian Taiga .... one person put (if memory serves me) a 22 rifle, an SKS, and a Mosin Nagant into a canoe .... all you would ever need.

I usually hunt with my 30-06 mostly , only use the SKS for deer at closer ranges. It’s a capable round when used within reason and limitations imho. Obviously shot placement counts as always too.
