Questions re S&W M&P 15-II

Hello folks, I have just ordered a S&W M&P 15 II, apparently I won't receive it for at least 2 weeks (thank you Ont CFO) I have a few very basic questions, not apparent to the non AR owner.
For the purchase of upgrades:
Is the M&P 15 a carbine length or rifle length ? (for fore-end measurements..the barrel is 16")
Is it Mil-Spec, or Commercial ?
Does anyone in Canada sell the Magpul upgrade kits ? (Stock, Fore-end, Grip)
What is the preferred optic for 100-300 yds static target ?
Any good tips on other upgrades and suppliers would be appreciated :wave:

Carbine length gas system
Mil-spec buffer tube
Lots of supporting dealers on here carry Magpul stuff but finding "in stock" stuff may be the biggest challenge
Optic depends on budget but a good red dot will serve you well. Aimpoint, Trijicon, Vortex, Eotech are all good.

If you want an optic right away I would say get that and just shoot the crap out of the rifle and see how it feels. Next would be stock, grip and fore-end to make it more personalized. After that, spend more money on ammo and shoot the crap out of it and enjoy a very well made and very affordable AR!!

2 weeks would actually be pretty quick in ON if you just purchased it.
 
Check theammosource.com . Lots of Magpul goodies in stock....

Love my Sport II. Excellent value. I was running a slim Magpul forend originally but switched to a M-Lok freefloat from magdump.ca.

I have one as well, as noted finding the items you want in stock will be/has been the challenge. True North Arms and GP Tactical were able to supply the furniture. Local shop for the optic and mount on a screaming Black Friday deal.

FWIW, I went Magpul for the furniture, SL hand guard, MOE K2+ for the grip, MOE SL for the stock. The SL hand guard reaches out over the gas block giving you a bit more fore grip however you will need to remove the sling pivot. I added the M-LOK QD and mounted it on the hand guard with an MS1 sling.

Optic, well I suffer from an astigmatism so I went with a prism optic, Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 on a Burris P.E.P.R. QR mount, kept the irons for back up. Love it and I can shoot it both eyes open like a red dot but gives me the reach for longer ranges.

True North Arms, Canada Ammo usually have the Magpul goodies in stock, depending on what color you want.

Free float is definitley the way to go for a carbine length, better accuracy plus compliments at the range. Haha.

Same thing as berger's, with a Nikon scope. Hopefully taking her to a 200 yd competition this year, shooting this thing at 200-300 m is like cheating its so easy :)

That’s a bold statement without any evidence, ha ha!

One might want to consider the barrel design and how the entire firearm was built to go together, simply free floating a barrel designed to have a forward support point does not guarantee anything.

I get that some people like the look but I would buy a free float AR that was designed to be free float.

Knew I should have taken pictures, dammit! Next time I get to the range I'll return with evidence. Lol.

Before the handguard, was getting about 1.90 @ 100 m, not in a vise or anything, just using my ammo can as a rest. After free floating, .99 :D Of course its not the case everytime, but I guess I lucked out, running 55 gr PPU

Another variation of a budget S&W MP15 build ... just under $1100 all in.

$765 EE purchase MP15 WITH low profile keymod handrail install over a shaved stock gas block and tube .
$103 CTSC VENDOR purchase of MFT Minimalist Battlestock in scorched dark earth.
$ 30 EE purchase Aukmount 45* offset back up iron sites
$200 EE purchase Burris Extreme AR red dot.

Comfortable to shoot ... as accurate as you can be all day long out to 200 yards as far as I know anyhow. Weighs in at ..... lbs WITH a Beouwolf 5 round .50 cal magazine holding 15 rounds of .223 .... cuz it can .

Pictured in between is it’s S&W MP15-22 .22lr training cousin with the same “ manual of arms “ for inexpensive live firing drills to get you used to the platform for match shoots . It’s a $400 firearm with about $150 in add-ons.

I employ a similar budget approach to the handgun genre using the S&W MP22 to train for the 9mm. After trying a half dozen 9mm semi autos I may end up settling with a MP9 2.0 .

IF and when I get good enough to crack top 10 locally at IDPA and Tac Rifle with these I’ll think about rewarding myself with something along the lines of a Sig Sauer , a CZ or a HK and maybe even move up to .45 ACP but until then this budget approach is serving me ( and hundreds of thousands others ) well enough.

No I purchased it like that with the low profile keymod handrail. It is the stock system trimmed , painted and housed in the new lower profile free float rail.
 
I just watched IV8888's new meltdown video on the M&P Sport II. It lasted just under 900rds of full auto fire. Even then it didn't truly quit working. It just stopped cycling the action. They could of kept pulling the charging handle and shoot it like a bolt action. Its very impressive because two other entry level AR's they did only lasted 400 - 440rds and MilSpec AR's only did slightly better than 900rds.
