Question - Tika T3 Owners

Is a good thing in one way but my take is a Remmy is safer. Hunt hard with a tikka and I have found the safety go from safe to fire on it's own. Very seldomly but it has happened to me a few times. The pin that locks into the bolt gets knocked when the bolt handle gets hit and can slowly be pushed out of the bolt and the safety goes on fire. With a remmy you only loose a cartridge.

Certainly has not been my experience.
 
I love my tikka, but I shake my head occasionally at the poor design of the safety. A 3 position like the modification available is superior.

Gunwerks (I think)was also doing a mod that did not change the safety, but does not lock the bolt closed...

I do too but I'm torn. There is something to be said for being able to shoulder the rifle, click the safety off and know your ready, ie the bolt handle is down. I missed a chance at a coyote once because the handle was up a bit. Click!

In over 45 years of hunting, I have never had that happen, but if I have been going through thick brush, I have a quick look and sometimes even give the bolt a push to make sure that it is down before firing.
 
I was about 18 when it happened and have never made the same mistake again. A bump with my palm is just part of the shouldering routine now. Even on the ones that lock the bolt closed. Haha.
 
I've only ever had an issue with a savage 3 position safety. It locked the bolt shut and wouldnt open. I ended up shooting the round and it released the bolt.

Never an issue with a 2 position safety tho. I like safetys. And always have it on when im wondering around, but i wouldnt get too tied up in this if I were you. Its almost meaningless.
 
It also depends on your trigger pull. A 7lb factory lawyer trigger is less of an issue. I have a yodave spring in my tikka and am pulling about 3lbs. It'll go lighter, but I don't care for it when hunting...
 
I have a m70 3pos safety, I have a Remington m700 2pos, I have a tikka t3 2pos... My Favorite safety is the exposed hammer on my BLR though.

Tikka is my favourite on a bolt gun. I love that it locks the bolt. In fact I'll periodically give the bolt a lift to verify the gun is safe when slinging it loaded. I do not have to look at the rifle to do this. As mentioned, if you are German-safety conscious, there are 3pos upgrades available for tikka... And Remington.

My dad's (former) hunting partner had a negligent discharge with his M700 while slung over his shoulder. I don't fault the safety, but I know I have bumped my 700 off of 'safe' accidentally. I have NEVER had that happen with any other design.

They say a good driver checks their mirrors every 8 seconds. I feel like a similar best practice applies when carrying rifles afield - keep an eye on on the safety. Maybe not every 8 seconds, but with a tikka you don't even have to use your eyes!

Agree, whatever safety you have just be aware of how it works and operate it properly. With unloading the tikka- point in a safe direction, finger away from trigger, drop safety, open action. PROVE

I like that the tikka bolt stays closed on safe, I had a savage with a bolt that always seemed to open a bit. The ultimate safety is the Winchester Mod 70 type with 3 position safety and firing pin lock.
