I am converting 30/06 cases to 9.3 X 57.
Everything is going well but I would like a faster way to cut the cases from 62mm to 57 mm.
A Forester trimmer takes a lot of cranking
Lee does not make a 9.3 X 57 length gage for their trimming system, I am contemplating using a Lee 8 X 57 length gage and shimming it, then putting it in drill press.

Does any one have any ideas on a short cut to cut 5mm off a case neck?

I do have Forester neck thickness cutter. I may have to get the 9.3 neck guide directly from forester

I think I would just put a sleeve on the Lee tool's stem to compensate for the larger caliber.

I chuck annealed 30-06 cases in my drill press after re-forming them in a 7.5x54 die.

Set the table of the drill press to the proper height that a planer blade fits tight under a properly trimmed case, and the hole in the table is centered under the excess neck. Turn the case at the lowest speed setting and slide the planer blade into the side of the neck with only enough pressure to cut the brass.

Chamfer the neck and they're good to go.

Got it. Thank you

I had a Mauser in 9.3X57 that I loaded for a short while before I rechambered it to 9.3X62. I made brass from both 8X57 and 30-06.

8X57 - easy peasy, but there's a possibility that if the brass you use has necks on the thin side, that once expanded, since it will further thin, it might not properly grip the 9.3 mm bullets. That was not my experience with Prvi 8X57 brass which worked fine for 9.3X57, and which I also use to make 7X57.

30-06 - not so simple. After resizing, I cut it down close to its final length using a little Chop Saw I bought from eBay, although I've also cut down brass using a bench mounted sanding disk. Final length was a 8X57 Lee Case Length Gauge with aluminum tape wrapped around it. The problem was that some of the neck was formed from the body of the 30-06, so it had to then be outside neck turned. Not worth the trouble IMO.

Both were annealed afterwards.

Why not just buy 100 Lapua or Privi 8x57 and be done with it?

That caliber and rifle probably deserves good brass, and 100 cases would last a lifetime.

Nice thought but 100 cases may not last a lifetime and the last I looked 5 20 round boxe are $400 not incuding shipping. Cases converted from 30/06 fit my budget and will last exactly the same as factory rolled cases.

I understand your sentiments. I make my 243 and 358 brass out of 308 - the parent caliber. I even use 308 to make 356 nrass, in a pinch. All my 7x57 brass was made from 8x57.

I have used 30-06 to make 280 and 270 brass.

But using the grandparent brass is a step to far for me. A lot of neck has to be cut off and then maybe the resulting neck has to be turned because it is too thick.

Hence the suggestion to buy 8x57 brass. Maybe an EE WTB would get some once fired, cheap.

But, if you are the kind of guy that enjoys that kind of task, go for it. Me - I am too lazy.

And going through my "Gonna use one day so I didnt toss it out" cabinet I discover I have 500 8x57 brass...
The joys of being a hoarder...
My 30/06 stash is safe....
