The Eternal Struggle

Kimber Classic Select? ....

Oh yes, they are among my favs too ... especially my stainless versions, which unfortunately are no longer available

One thing though, D4Dave1 .. you say that you "really like quality wood on a rifle and the Classic Select stock is beautiful. But...only available with a blind mag" ..
.. but (unless Kimber has recently changed their product), they have hinged floorplates, not blind mags ... see photos of mine below :

The upper rifle in each pic is in 7mm-08 ... the lower in .308 .... and, as you can see, both have hinged floorplates.

And in case you are interested ...
Because I hunt with the composite-stocked Montanas, both of these Kimbers are MINT safe-queens:
  • the 7mm-08 (swirley AAA walnut) is unfired,
  • the .308 (tiger-stripe AAA walnut) has had 2 boxes of ammo through it, at the range only.

And D4Dave1, if you really do want something like this, and might like one in .308 (perhaps with a 2nd stainless barrel in .243), send me a PM

I had a beautiful walnut/blued MK II in .257 Roberts, which I foolishly sold many years ago. I also had a superb MK II stainless/synthetic in 270 WSM, that I took a couple of deer with, and foolishly sold that one too. I would definitely like to replace the 270 WSM. The only Rugers I have now are the Gunsite Scout rifle in .308 Win with the 16.1" barrel and the MK II walnut/blued in 450 Bushmaster. You don't want to know what I paid for the 450 BM...

One of these is a 7mm WSM... I like it...

Dennis,
Thanks for the info!

You are correct I believe. It appears that the Classic Select does have a hinged floor plate not a blind mag. I am not sure where I got the idea that they are blind mags from, but somewhere along the way the idea was planted in my simple little brain. No matter, I am quite used to being wrong and will happily correct myself.

But I will say that no where on Kimber's web site do they clearly explain what type of mag these rifles have, which I find odd.?? I had to go watch some guys YouTube video to see the hinged floor plate.

Now that does put a new spin on my decision making. Although I still prefer the drop mag the hinged floor plate is at least tolerable compared to a blind mag. While intellectually I understand the advantages of stainless steel the appearance leaves me cold. I just can't stomach it. Personal taste I know....

Thanks for the offer(s) of your rifles but the 7-08 is essentially the same as a 7x57 which is on my list and the .308 is a larger caliber than I am interested in.

Hoytcanon"s comment about Ruger having an offering in .257 Roberts is making me do some research on their web site now.

And the struggle continues....

So I just went to Ruger's web site and they do indeed offer the .257 Roberts in their Hawkeye Standard rifle. Essentially the same rifle as the Kimber, 1 1/2 inches longer, both have hinged floor plates, both a right twist at 10 with 6 grooves, 22 inch slick barrels, don't know the price difference yet. But the kicker is the Ruger shows at 8 pounds weight while the Kimber shows at 5 lb.'s 12 ounces. How is that even possible? 2 pounds 4 ounces is significant in a rifle.

The Ruger will be 7 lb 2 oz... depending on wood density... mine has particularly dense wood, with Ruger rings, a VX-3 3.5-10X40 and a full magazine, it weighs in at 8.5 pounds and feels like a REAL rifle.

I have no problem with a rifle that weighs ~8 pounds fully dressed. But a rifle that starts at 8 pounds will be pushing 10 pounds by the time it is wearing all the jewelry and make up. Perhaps a .375 might need a rifle of that weight, but not a .257. I'm not kidding, the Ruger web site says 8 pounds.
Depending on price the Ruger is definitely a candidate.

I'm saying the rifle is not 8 pounds... that is a cut and paste from another description... the rifle will likely be a few ounces lighter than the .257 Roberts I posted above.

Just out of curuosity, I weighed the rings and four rounds of ammo, they totalled 8.1 ounces, the VX-3 3.5-10x40mm weighs 12.6 ounces, totalling 20.7 ounces. Subtract that from the total "all-in" weight of 8 lb 8.8 ounces and you have a bare rifle weight of 7 lb. 4.1 ounce. As I said, the stock on my 257 is one of the densest that I own... so I suspect that your rifle would come in at least a couple ounces lighter... in the 7 lb 2 ounce range... or a tad less.

Another thought is to buy an action and barrel in your caliber choice and buy a high grade wood stock for it and have it bedded

I personally don't see the need as I have a plastic stocked blind mag 25/06 for hunting in any weather and I've settled on a 250 savage for the high grade wood for those nice days sitting in the woods. I've been looking at a Mauser action and have a guy in mind to make a stock for it once I find the right blank

I'd go with the nice wood. Even if whoever ends up with it uses it and scratches it up it just gives it character. After all it was made to be used. I know I'd rather get a used fine wood stocked gun I could choose to refinish over a mint plastic stock but that's just me

I picked up the classic select in the Roberts a couple years back and put a leupy 2 -7 on top and she is a thing of beauty. Epps may still have one. Tupperware has its place but nice French walnut will make u week in the knees and will be admired for generations.

Yep. Epps has what u are looking for.

Thanks TaylorJW. I am a wee bit frustrated by your find because I have repeatedly searched E.P's web site using their search function for .257 and have come up empty. But I guess theirs is not the first web site on the net to have a poor search function.

Thanks for the extended input Hoytcanon. The weight you describe is within reason. It does baffle me a bit why a manufacturer would not proof read their ads and correct information that buyers would consider significant??

Epps has a "poor search function"? ... I disagree.
All anyone needs to do is: [1] click on 'rifles', [2] then on 'Kimber', [3] then on 'Kimber 84M Classic Select Grade 257 Roberts' ... and this comes up:

Really, what could be easier?

I found Kimber exactly as you described. However what I had been doing for the past while is using the Search box on the main page and entering ".257 Roberts" and that was coming up empty. I was using the "Search" function because I had no idea what brand of firearm manufacturer might be chambering the .257 Bob.

Doing what you are suggesting is not using the "Search" function. It is following out the links.

But at the end of the day I found it after TaylorJW's suggestion, so all is well.

I'm not impressed with the wood in that one... too light for my taste.

Same here.

And you can call me names, but I sort of feel some loyalty(?) to Prophet River because Tanner has gone out of his way to search information down for me and find price and delivery times. Plus I am in no screaming hurry to get the rifle so time isn't really an issue.

At this point in time I am going to wait for price/delivery time for a Ruger so I can compare apples to apples then I can make a decision.

Having said all that, I have purchased a shotgun from EE and the whole process went great so certainly not slagging them at all.
