Corventing Lee Enfield 303 to 7.62x39

I'm was looking at doing it too. But after doing a lot of looking around...and thinking about it..this is what I've come up with... just down load...so uses a 123 gr from a 7.62x39 or go a bit further, and down load to a 32 cal handgun bullet...way easier. and it's still a high power 303 round ,rifle. Seems to make sense. It'll take awhile to get the powder loads right , but that's the half fun of it.

I did. Tons of work.

First, I actually did change the barrel. Next. You need to change the bolt head, finally, you need to create an adapter for mags. I had a gunsmith in US to make one. Note, it would not take double stack mags, but single stack mags would work easily.

That's what I realized after reading the article. I can shoot 7.62x39 loads in 303 casing and still have 303 caliber.

This forum is good. If I didn't read the opinion from you members, I would've wreck my Enfield.
 
I was gung ho for a bolt aaction 7.62x39 for years. Acquired a no4mk1 sporter to modify, then found chamber adapter for 7.62x51 to 7.62x39 (never installed), and finally got my hands on a Norinco jw-103.
...to date(over 7 years) I've probably fired 15 rds of x39 with a bolt action...

I haven't given up, but certainly changed my focus. Having started reloading about 2 years ago I can now launch rimfire velocity cast out of any of my gems, and still have the ability to sling full powered loads. Why change a gun when I can vary it's ammo?

I would still like to build one just for kicks though.
 
I still have the urge to do the conversion. Would be nice to shoot corrosive ammo, the cleaning would be simple, no gas tube and pistons and bolt carrier etc. I have 9'' Southbend lathe, I could probably cut the thread on it, but I have no machining experience. My trade is a foundry Pattern maker, using only woodworking machinery.

Brings a smile to my face everytime I shoot it. :)

jaroslav, I don't have a lot of experience on the lathe save for standing for hours as a kid, watching my father (who was a machinist) work his skills. There are lots of youtube videos of fellows cutting threads with a lathe. Practice using scrap materials. Patience is a virtue.
 
mkrainc..if I would have know that you had done , one of these conversion, before a sent you the rear No5 sight...then a probable...would have owned you money!! :) Nice work!!

The real reason I'm hesitating is that my sporter No 4 has very good matching barrel, receiver and bolt. I think I would have to cut 5/8'' of the chamber and thread it. The s/n would be machined off. I guess I'll wait if I can find non matching No4 sporter. I don't want SMLE because the rear sight is too far away and I don't want to use a scope.
