Norinco 1911 -- Slide Lock

Hi,

Love the pistol and the way it shoots... but, with hotter loads, the slide does not stay open on the last shot; rather, the tab on the follower rides up and over the slide lock, so it is hard to eject. When I rack the slide back and lock it manually, then eject the mag, I have to pull it over slide release, which releases the slide.

Anyone else have these issues? Is it the magazines or the Pistol?

Thanks.

It could be either - or both. Take a look at the engagement of the follower to the hold open, and try a different brand of magazine - they all seem to have different followers. If that doesn't work, you may need to change out the slide lock.

Had the same problem with 1/2 of the norinco factory magazine. The Norc factory mags are pretty bad, cheap design. Retailer replaced the mag and now it's fine. I've never had that problem with the dlask/magtech magazines. The follower is obviously a better design.

Thanks for the advice and feed back; I think I might "dink" with the mags a bit; nothing to loose, and if no joy, I will pick up some aftermarket ones.

Mags aside, the gun is perfect!

Update, tweeked the mags a bit; not any better. Bought two Remington Mags (really nice and only 30 bucks each; no better. Took the slide off and saw that the followers were engaging the release as they should (or so I thought); put the slide back on and discovered that either the notch in the mag release that engages the slide is too wide, the slide is too narrow, or the release is too short.

Movement along the axis of the mag release pin allows it to move away from the mags by just a few thousands, which allows the mags to over-ride it.

Dilemma:

If it is the release, then an inexpensive release should fix it; if it's the frame/slide interaction, maybe not.

Solution:

When I get time, I will lengthen the mag release pin slightly by tig welding the end of it, then hand working it to where there is no interference with the ammo, but good engagement with the mag follower. I will post photos if I can, when I get around to it!

Thanks for your feed back everyone!

Mark

Fixed!

I've given up trying to post pictures on this site; bad enough on the other one, but at lease I can download directly from the computer.

To see photos, you can go to "other site" or send me an email and I will gladly forward photos.

Good Morning Meroh, Glad to hear you fixed your issue. I am having a similar problem, but I am very much a newbie and can't figure it out. I have a Norc 1911 .45 commander and at first I had no issues, but now the slide does not always lock after the final shot. It is so inconsistent it is driving me nuts. I have 2 Norc magazines 7&8 rnd, 2 10 rnd mec-gar and 1 10 nrnd Wilson Arms. I can't find any consistency for the issue though. Sometimes it's Ok, others not, doesn't seem to matter which magazine. I am a newbie and wouldn't be brave enough to try any gun smithing myself but any advice you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that when it does not lock, you can tell the slide release lever is does not return to the 'top' position and the magazine is hard to release. Normally the magazines will drop out easily, but when it doesn't lock I need to pull the magazine out. Have a great weekend!

This was exactly the issue that I was having. Send me a PM with with an email, and I will send you photos. I would have no issue with building up your mag release for you, but after it's built up, it would need to be hand fit to your gun to make sure it did not interfere with the feeding of your bullets in the magazine.

I wanted to thank Mark for taking the time to help me. He sent pictures of his work to me right away and we are working on this. THANKS MARK!

I want to thank you again for taking the time to help me. It seems these days people get so disconnected that we sometimes forget to reach out and help others, and I wanted to let you know that I am very grateful that you reached out to me.

Have a great weekend and thanks.

Mike

from what you two has describ, a 9mm slide lever would have fixed that.

google 9mm slide lever vs 45. The 9mm version is ever so slightly longer on the internal leg to engage the mag follower

No problem, we are all in this together!

That does make sense! Mags would be narrower, so it would have to reach in further. If it hits the bullets are hitting it, a little rework would fix it.

That would have been easier, but not as quick as my weld fix. LOL

Good Day Everyone,

I wanted to thank Meroh for the great advice. I ordered a new 9mm slide lock and it seems to test at home flawlessly. Of course the real test will be 'live' at the range, but if that works as well as the home testing we are golden.

Thanks Again!
M.

FWIW, I replaced my Norkie slide slocks with original Colt slide locks. Without any fitting/filing, they worked perfectly for my mags, i.e. Norkie original, Colt, McCormick Shooting Star, mags with Tripp spring and follower kits.

The only Norc slide stops I've had an issue with is the extended variety that they seem to put on the newer versions. Like you I've changed mine out. I've had great success just going with a standard version, some have been Colt & some other makers. But all have worked fine for me.

I changed mine out to the Wilson Combat 9mm/38 super slide stop. Not because it did not work ,but I could not stand the look of that horrible Norinco extended slide stop!

Another thanks to Meroh. I shipped my original slide stop to him and he re-worked it for me. After installing it now ALL of my magazines are working well. Hats off to a fine gentleman!

Thanks
Mikey

I'm having this issue with my latest Norc .45. it's odd as it was fine since I got it but the last outing I had issues as described. I will get looking for a 9mm slide stop.
