If you are near a Wholesale, the Winchester AA 7.5 shot is going for $6.70 a box. $0.27 a round. My store has a few cases left of it.
Sold out here in Calgary.
I think some poor advice is being given. Since you are new to the sport you may not understand. Some are trying to point you to quality but yet still economical shells, others are just listing cheap shells.
Don’t go buying a bunch of shells until you learn what you like. I’m not a heavy shooter but do my fair share at around 4500-5500 per year. I reload (AA Hull, 700x (17.2gr), 7/8-1 oz, #8, 7.5, clay buster 7/8 wads). Extremely light recoil. I shoot the odd flat of purchased shells. I keep 15-20 on standby at all times. Mainly filled with AA’s, select types of Challenger, and some ultra cheap gun clubs I bought.
Challengers will often be referenced when taking cheaper shells. Please be aware their product line varies a lot. Some are a pleasure to shoot and can be purchased around 70$/flat if you wait. I like their light target and 24g loads. These are often the rarest in stores and typically don’t go on sale. The ones on sale are often their 3dram +. The stuff people buy like crazy but don’t know better.
You’ll learn what you like. New shooters tend to punish themselves with harsh recoiling loads because the shells are cheap or people have given them bad advice. Most experienced shooters know certain shells recoil less (felt recoil) and perform as good or better. You don’t need 1300 FPS or even 1-1/8 loads.
So you think, I’m a man, I can take it. Wrong. Fatigue is a major issue in shotgun shooting, especially competitions where hundreds of shells can be shot in a day, along with walking, standing, even mild hiking. It all wears on yo so why shoot a shell that is abusive and reduces the ability to retain proper swing and follow through.
My advice is to wait, shoot boxes or individual flats until you find what you like. If you are patient you can buy top quality ammo for 90$/flat (AA’s with their rebate) or decent quality (remember not all shells are the same) for 60-70$/flat.
Please don’t take people’s advice of “shoot 7.5 1-1/8’S” works for me. That’s bad advice.
