Beautiful and accurate norwegian mauser

I'd take my Norwegian K98 over just about any modern sporting rifle. That thing is silly accurate (with irons!), built like a tank and has an interesting history. Modern rifles are what I take on the rough hunts, as they're replaceable.
I've got a real simple choice when it comes to hunting ....I either use a scope ( typically a fixed 4x) or I don't shoot.....my eyes are long past using iron sights,even a ghost ring peep sight.Close range is ok, but any distance is out. I mssed a nice buck a couple of years ago, with my swede with a Norma ghost ring ,it was only 100 yards away,so that rifle stays in the gun cabinet now

Nice Nowegian Airborn. You made great use of the drilled and tapped receiver... she looks to be a real shooter. How does she group? I am getting ~1.5 inches at 50m using irons and Prvi Garand ammo. I am sure mine is
capable of much better with handloads and more time with iron sights.

Thx. Never shot it with optics yet but those improved irons the Norwegians have, about 1.5" at 100m (3shot group) using cheap American Eagle 147gr FMJ. With decent ammo and glass it could likely be MOA. I would like to note that my barrel is like new for some reason.
Were the Norwegian K98's ever offered in .308 or just the Israeli's ?
A .308 K98 drilled & tapped in good condition would be perfect imo. Collectors be damned !!!
Most or all were in 30-06 (7.62x63mm). If you find one in .308 be prepared to pay major $$$ as there are few to none. I believe the Norwegians had a last run of these conversions in 7.62x51mm NATO but by reading some post from Norway, some say they never happened!
Might be better off getting an Israeli conversion to .308

I'm not versed in all the Mauser details .... although my Dad gave me a fantastic Mauser book that appears to have about anything one could want to know about the options. Have to get reading that again.

I forgot to add the Navy kept theirs in 8mm.
I don't know why all the to do about a .30-'06 Mauser shooting so well.
Years ago at a gun show I bought a pair of post-WWII Belgian Mausers - one on .30'-06, the other the .22 trainer. Both are built on an FN Fabrique Nationale actions. Both are very accurate rifles, the .22 doing it's best work with CCI Minimags which match the sight settings. It's my squirrel head shot rifle and knocks over .22 Silhouette targets at 100 m off hand just fine.
I've had people turn their noses up at them because they got the Teflon coating Belgium applied to their rifles in the era. Big deal. The '06 was going to be my 'beater' rifle but it's become a treasured rifle and I take out my Rem 788s instead when the going gets rough. A guy wanted to buy it from me and 'sporterize' it. That sale didn't happen.

I believe that the post-war Belgian .30-'06 Mausers were purpose built. The wrist of the stock is beefier to handle the recoil.

what exactly did they do?

-Since my holes were Tig welded, had to be re-tapped and drilled and possibly realigned,
-Warne bases were custom cut and lapped as I wanted the option of using irons and stripper clips again when not in "scope" mode.
-Bolt handle bent and re shaped for optics,
-Installed a Timney low profile safety on the bolt with some gunsmithing required as they are not a perfect fit.
