I wonder if anyone here would have an answer for me, whether it's good or bad.

Anything wrong with having a receiver for a 1905 Ross case hardened? What about the bolt carrier or bolt?

Ross parts don't take to caustic bluing very evenly, at least not with my setup, and my latest receiver has turned blue and sort of brownish. Considering this particular one is not a candidate for restoration back to original, I thought case hardening would really make it stand out.

Appreciate any advice on this one.

You can colour case harden anything (save the barrel and bolt internals). If you decide to get it done, be sure you hire a pro. There are a few names here in Canada, but not many.

Bolt carriers were case coloured on MKIII militaries anyway. I would not do the bolt as the CCH surface becomes brittle.
There is a guy in Nova Scotia who does it and is highly regarded.
Will try to dig him up.

Oskar Kob's name popped up while snooping around the forum already. Also found out about Alain Combes out of Quebec.

Will have to get in contact with 1 or both, and see where it goes.

Is this the one you're referring to:

Colouring looks awesome on that thing!

This rifle has a custom stock, and I was going to just use a rubber butt pad......but I might just need to find or make a steel butt plate now. If I'm doing case hardening, I'm going to have to include the trigger guard as well.

And here I thought I was almost done this project.

Talked to Oskar today. His price sounds really reasonable and his turnaround time is quick. Will be sending the parts off to him next week.

Only crummy part is that I spent hours and hours polishing these parts hoping for a nice, vibrant blued finish. Now I have to scratch them up with 400 grit.....

On the other hand, if this case hardening turns out looking great, the next sporter I fix up will get the same treatment.

DON'T DO ANYTHING with sandpaper. Oskar will properly prep each part prior to CCH.

These are my previews, as I don't have the parts back yet, but the parts are looking pretty darn gorgeous to me:

I can't wait to get them back and get it all assembled. I'll likely be sending him more parts in the near future!

Now I'm just not sure if the barrel will match better with bluing or just polished steel?

I'm also probably going to be disappointed that I don't have a nice steel butt pad for this setup. I might just have to carve one up now.
