Lee enfield experts!

Can you show us a little more of the receiver. It's a 1943 BSA produced No4 MK1. Serial number is electro penciled...a good sign it's be thru India or maybe FTR.

Is there a "T" stamped on the right side of the receiver, near the ejector screw? And any drilled and tapped holes around there too?

M47, made by BSA in 1943, TR, telescope ready, "T" on left side, thank you fellas, I was not sure if she was authentic, my mind set at ease, once again just ask! Cheers Rob

Congrats.

'43s are hard to find here.

Original finish was blueing.

1944 is when they started to use Brunofixing (sort of the "spackle" sparkly finish. It's been described as a textured Parkerizing, but it's more of an early coating type finish), so you will find early '44s (and all previous years) with blued receivers.

I take it that it's your first?

That TR stamp doesn’t look right to me.

I agree that it looks a little off, but real TR stamps (on no4T snipers) are often poorly struck...I would take them as being merely 1 of several markings.

BB hasn't showed us the rest of the receiver.... it could easily be a standard No4MkI, not a sniper.

All the TR stamping meant was that a rifle was acceptable for conversion, there are a number of known TR marked rifles which were not converted.

As a note, I (previously) owned a D6E (the H&H stationed sniper conversion inspector)[really not something you could fake] inspector marked post war (1947) dated standard BSA No4MkI rifle... something which "shouldn't" exist on several levels.

On their own, often the markings don't really mean very much.

thanks

I have not read an authoratiative explanation of who and when rifles got stamped.

It has been my understanding that if a rifle was found to be unusually accurate, at the factory, it was stamped TR there, and sent on to H&H as a potential sniper rifle.

H&H then did their thing to the rifles, including fitting the scope bases, and stamping the S on one side and the S51 on the bottom.

I have such a rifle. It never had a scope fitted to it. It was unfired when I got it. Probably never issued.

It now has a repro scope and it shoots very well.

Can someone confirm that it is the rifle factory, not H&H that stamps the "TR". If it is the factory, it would make sense that there are different fonts on different makes of rifles.
