From grouse to lynx coyotes to deer and to moose size animals. My collection consists from a old ussr 22 lr grouse, 17 hmr Ruger american compact for lynx, and 22 250 tikka t3 lite stainless for coyotes, maybe wolves my old 243 win remington 788 for from coyotes to wolves and deer. My favorite 6.5 creedmoor browning x bolt stainlesss mostley for deer. 30-06 in a remington 700 stainless for deer moose size animals.Tthink i have every aspect of hunting north american big game with these rifles what are your thoughts i mostly hunt deer and predators if i go after a moose size animal not very often i would use my 30 06 with a hot 150 grain barnes ttsx. My 17 hmr I use a 20 grain game point cci soft point lynx maybe coyote under 100 yards. Then my 22 250 use a 55 grain vmax geared towards coyotes maybe wolves but i think this bullet too light . my 243 shoots a 95 grain fushion factory sub moa which dont bother re reloading geared towards wolves and deer. My favorite 6.5creedmoor load up a hot 143 grain hornady eld-x, geared towards my deer hunting, my 30 06 with the 150 grain barnes ttsx for moose and deer but that rifle mostly geared towards a moose elk. What are your thoughts of my arsenal and the calibres you use and of coarse a cougar rifle. Which im considering either a lever action 30-30, or a compact bolt action 308 or 7mm 08 strictly for cougar hunting. I think a compact bolt action is more dependable than a lever action for tree'd cougars.

Couple 22lr for small game, small varmints, pests around the farm and plinking-target shooting.
17wsm which has pretty much taken over for my pest-varmint rifle and thinking on maybe trying it out for close range (100-150 yd) coyotes.
243 for my long range varmint, coyote rifle, and a back up deer rifle and has been a loaner for deer a couple times.
12 ga for small game, birds and deer when pushing thick swamps.
My good ol 30-06 for deer, moose and any big game animal in which I will ever hunt.
TheCVA wolf 50 cal muzzleloader for our December black powder hunt that I'd like to upgrade someday.
Definitely a couple other smaller calibers that I would like to own someday just because, but really don't need (220 swift, 6mm to replace 243, maybe another 22-250 and possibly a 260 and would love to get another savage 24 chambered in 30-30/12 or 20 ga which I would use for deer pushs likely exclusively). I've got everything I need for any hunting I'll ever do though but still always seem to come up with reasons I need something else. LOL.

I passed out from oxygen deprivation before I got to the end of your paragra... er, sentence. If you give me your address, I’ll mail you some punctuation free of charge :p ;-)

You’re off to a good start there elterible. Now you just need to round out your collection with the other stuff... like a muzzle loader... a bow... maybe something a little bigger for those narwhal hunts... a good air rifle for those starling hunts... some handguns for when they reverse to hunting handgun ban <rolling eyes>... something cheap and dirty for those zombie hunts...

You’ve got some serious gaps in your collection, and it’s imperative that you fill them as soon as possible! If you need us to write a note for your wife, explaining how critical this situation is, we’d be happy to help :-D

Happy Hunting! (for game, AND more guns)

(only teasing about the punctuation. Pay no attention to me before the coffee hits my brain in the morning)

I got a 10/22 and a nice little single for woods walkin. A rugger scout in 308 for majority of hunting a 12g for clay busting and winged game and my 444 to handle the rest.

You should get a medium to big-bore dangerous game rifle. They are simply good fun to shoot. Something from a 9.3x62 to 458 Win Mag. The plus side is that the velocity of full power loads is low enough that you can shoot cast lead bullets for practice.

agreed. collection is a little light on the top end.

300 win mag would be a good addition. 30-06 is fine but the 300 has more legs when handloaded using 200grn bullets.

338 mag would also fill out the top end for NA game.

Your wall of text was a bit difficult to get through, but no worries, I'm glad you shared.
It seems like you pretty much have it covered for North American game, but don't stop now.
May be you could get ready for a Safari hunt, or drop those Moose with authority.

One can literally cover any conceivable North American hunting situation with a quality .22lr, 12 or 20 gauge and a center fire rifle chambered in a medium cartridge. Or one can have a rifle perfectly suited to every conceivable hunting niche. Neither one is better than the other.

I personally used to have more rifles suited to more niches, but have downsized a bit over the last couple years. I have a lightweight, stainless 700 in 7mm08 bedded into a quality synthetic stock that is ideal for pretty much any big game hunt on the planet (sans dangerous game). I also have a Ruger No. 1 in 300 H&H with an amazing piece of Walnut, there is not really any situation where it is a better choice than the 7mm08, but it is sometimes nice to hunt with a classy rifle. That is pretty much it. I have other rifles of course and I should get something suited to blowing up gophers at range, but I really don't need anything else, and I really don't even need the 300 H&H.

Got to love the caliber collectors, drinking the kool aid that every different situation requires a different calibre. A myth propagated by firearms manufactures looking to sell more firearms, but that's capitalism.

Cannot agree more with that statement. This whole industry is a marketer's dream come true.

well you could hunt everything with a 30-06 and a 12 gauge but where is the fun n that. Diversity is our strength.... or something like that... :)

my hunting guns start at 22-250 and end at 325WSM. the go to gun is a 300WM, but I like the 25-06 for deer.

I think I need more diversity just for fun.

Hear, hear. I could get by with my 22LR, 300 WinMag, and 12 gauge. But it's just fun having more guns :).

well if we are going to play that game :)
22RF
22-250
243win
25-06rem
7mm RM
30-30win
300WM
325WSM
20 gauge
12 gauge

those are the hunting guns..

I also have a few milsurp, black rifles/carbines, and pistols.

I think I see a 458 mag in my future....

.... Just keeping to the bare minimum, and ready availability of ammunition in small town stores'. So, 270, versatile from Moose down to ground hogs/varmints, 30-30 capable of dispatching anything in North America at relatively short ranges, and ideal for heavy brush hunting . A 22 LR, just for fun and practice, and good for Rabbits and other small game. 12 GA, anything that flies and is legal to shoot. With "slugs" even Moose and Bears! ... David K
