how to improve a smith and wesson M and P 22 pistol accuracy?

This was my first pistol so I figured the not so great accuracy was me just learning.

I took out my new S and W stealth hunter 45mag and I am WAY more accurate with it. I put about 25 rounds through it and after the first 4 or 5 I figured out the sites really well and I after that I was shooting like a pro.

I then put down the 45 and picked up the 22 m and p and thought my shooting with it would be better than last time. Nope. Still big groups and shooting high.

I don't like the sites on the M and P. I find there is lots of room for error with them.

I'm a newbie with handguns, can I replace the m and p sites? What does everyone recommend?

I'd probably suggest shooting it more, find out where it hits and compensate.

Reality is that some guns also just work better for us individually, not so much in the accuracy being a lot
better, just the fit.

That said, I would also ask you what you have done in terms of testing multiple ammo brands/types?

There can be pretty substantial differences with some guns, and this might be the very first thing I do with any
gun that I did not plan to reload ammo with, like any rimfire.

Make sure your adjustable sight isn't loose. Other than that practice and try out a few variety of ammo see if there is any that the gun prefers. This is assuming the problem isn't your shooting.

The M&P .22 has an adjustable rear sight. It’s not the best and I’ve heard of folks running out of adjustment. The sights aren’t great to be honest. I have one and maybe I’m lucky because I was able to set it just right in my second visit to the range. Now it’s incredibly accurate. Although the other day I noticed it was a bit off with some different ammo. Try something different. CCI Mini Mags work great. Reliable performance. If you’re still having trouble there is replacement sights available for around $150 if I’m not mistaken. For some reason Dawson Precision comes to mind. Search it in here though. I found lots of good info relating to that in here.
One big thing I did to help my accuracy was learn proper grip. I googled and read and googled some more. Videos etc. There is excellent advice out there and it really does help a lot.

The M&P is not really noted as highly accurate piece it's more or less a stylized "Service" pistol type

I’ve read this as well but find mine to be quite accurate. My oldest son picked it up and started drilling holes with it right away also. Maybe I got lucky. For the price I paid I’m content.

I found the M&P 22 sights to be a little too course for my liking. One of the reasons why I let it go and kept my GSG.

M

Have an M&P 9mm and the .22, the 9 is more accurate, but the .22 is quite acceptable.
The 22 is surprisingly reliable, haven't had a single failure with it yet.

I went through the same grief. Factory sights suck.
First I pulled off the rear sight and tried to paint it for better visibility, but that failed.
Then I put on a Mako rail adapter and a red dot sight and boom, my groupings were way tighter. Wasn't the gun that was the issue.. sights and eyes.
I've since moved the RD to a S&W 22 Victory, but still really like shooting the M&P.
Wish I could find a nice set of fiber optics for a reasonable price....

M

course is a good description of the m and p sites.

I'll try to adjust the sites more. I think I need to look into replacing them.

Guy I bought it from said mini mag's shoot best. Even with those it's still off.

I'm finding that I can get decent groups, but its VERY difficult to aim compared to my stealth hunter. There seems to be a lot of room for error when aiming the M and P, hence I agree with the "course" descriptuion of the sites.
