2018 RIMFIRE goals?

After saying for years, that at this point in life, my CZ 452 varmint 22 lr was the only one I needed/wanted, A Remington 541 S appeared in October. My 2018 goal is to decide which one stays and which one leaves........Assuming that they will both shoot about equal, which would you guys keep?20170803_105924.jpg

.22 LRGUY, have you tried that segmenter insert for the Waltz die yet?

I've made some up, but haven't shot them yet. My CZ (that loves CCI Blazer) is living out in SW Alberta...so when I reunite with her this spring...I'll run some through, and report on the results! :)

When I find out which of my CZ's shoots best ..I'll sell the other one

I'd keep the one that feels best, assuming they both shoot the same.

These are working farms/ranches too...and in spite of what the hell-raisers will tell you, the land owners out there do prefer you use rimfires.

Seriously, you have been out west like two times shooting gophers and you are now an authority on what the majority of land owners prefer you to shoot gophers with(one ranch)? My god, them hell-raising centre-fire heathens ;) FYI for any other armchair quarterbacks - The ranches out here are so f-ing huge there is room to shoot .50 BMG at gophers and no-one would blink an eye. After 10+ years here I have yet to hear a rancher say, “please, I prefer you to bounce thousands of rounds of low velocity .22rim lead all over my ranch”.

The “normal” wind conditions here can be unreal, nothing like Ontario shooting conditions. I have seen my 17HMR shoot 12+” of wind in crosswind gusts @ 75 metres. If you want to shoot/hit at any distance other than an stones throw/shotgun/.22 rim range, you need to go centre fire. Take advantage of the wide open spaces, you are not in Ontario anymore.

If short range, low hit percentage cost savings(?) is what you are after, also try a slingshot(or throw rocks), the ranchers prefer that I hear ;)

The areas I “actually hunt" I can easily see for many, many kilometres in all directions(foothills and prairies). .22 rim is not an option for a pest control vacation.

HOHOHO - hell-raiser :)

Centerfire is fun, but when you can kill hundreds a day it gets pretty damn expensive and time consuming (at the reloading bench).

All the rimfires and centerfires have their place. All get used.

Which model of CZ?

Hey silver~it's a CZ452 Varmint. Shoots CCI Blazer 22 very well. Not match-grade stuff, nor match-grade accuracy, but it's capable of 1/2" @ 50 yards, so there aren't many misses out to 75. Beyond that, depends on wind and the kind of day I'm having. :)

Easy answer~both! :)

^.223 is a riot on gophers, wish I could afford to spend 7-8 days running mine the way we do the 22LR and 17HMR! Positively explosive hits. Rimfire is much less spectacular, but the gophers are every bit as dead..and often pretty gooey. :) As for what landowners do/don't prefer~I'm only referring to the 4 properties we shot in 2016, and on what the landowners themselves use. In any case, 22LR is all you need...argualbly all that makes sense if it's hundreds you're shooting per day...for 5-6+ days in a row. On the biggest ranch we shoot on (and the owners can use anything on their properties)...the two main gopher guns they use are a BRNO 2E (.22LR) with open sights and a SAKO (.22LR) with a Leopold scope on it. We were offered both to use, but took them up on the 2E because I always wanted to try one of those. The SAKO~if the offer is still open, I'll take that for a spin this coming spring.

Well, its all pretty up in the air for me right now.
I accomplished the challenge this year so, kinda killed my rim fire motivation.

I know I want to build a custom 10/22 that will hit the challenge.

If I move west I will 100% be doing that almost instantly. Will be fun for target and hunting.

I have downsized my handgun collection but bought a few more high quality .22lr rifles. I guess it is becoming clearer to me that I am mostly a BR rimfire shooter...

That 541S looks amazingly like one I used to own. Did you buy it from a BC resident? If so, it is a very accurate 22, and has made the 50M challenge on here.
I would keep both, but if you can only keep one, it should be that 541S. Eagleye.

I owned many of each and while not a Rem fan overall, the 541 S/T's I have owned have been excellent rifles... if you can get it shooting that is definitely what I would keep.

Assuming that they will both shoot about equal, I would say keep both. I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 22lr & love it.
That 541s is one beautiful rifle. Congratulations!

Hmmm, On second thought, you should keep your CZ Varmint, I'll take that old Remington of your hands. :)

The cold weather/cold fingers have prevented me from serious testing, but so far I am tending toward the opinions of Eagleye and hoytcanon.......This 541S is a keeper for sure. There are certainly a few "generations" of gunnutz on our site. The qualities of the 541S are likely more well known by earlier generations (older guys like me) than the more recent generations of gunnutz. These rifles were made 1972 to 1984 approx and we rarely see them come up for sale.......Not all that many of us here have ever had a chance to shoot one. The fact that this particular rifle has been "trained" by Eagleye in its former life is also a big plus for me !!
