What are the current requirements for buying a pistol in BC?

FWIW, I have my RPAL already.

I just left Ontario and from what I recall range membership was not required and the ATT was automatically attached to the license.

In BC, is the ATT attached to the license to shoot at any range in the province, or cross the border, or do I have to be a member of a specific range already?

I'm not seeing any ranges that I like in the Lower Mainland, or else they aren't accepting new members right now.

I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a pistol now and join a range later?

Thanks!

BC wants to see a gun club membership before they will issue ATT (authorization to transport).
Apparently, this much varies by province.

The CFO will want you to have a range membership to buy a pistol. You can try to argue your way through that by saying you aren't sure which range to join just yet, and see how far that gets you. :) Good luck!

I think in BC ATT is also attached now. I got my RPAL then join my club and emailed CFO a photo of the club membership card then I got the ATT in mail. After that buying online I only need to tell them my PAL info and the range name. Buying local in Richmond store I don't think they even asked me the range name but just confirmed if I already got ATT. The first one took a bit longer to approve.

Btw, my gun club has a $50 ATT a year thingy you don't have to pay the full membership.

Transport regs are the same, but the BC CFO will not register a restricted to anyone who isn't a member of a club. Get a membership where you can, to start, and then if you're looking for sanity, get your name on the list for Abbotsford.

Laws are federal not provincial.
That is true, but not the way things work, every provincial CFO has different rules, I can sell a hand gun into Ontario with out a range membership, but in my home province and west I can not, Well I can sell the gun, but transfer will sit in limbo until the CFO sees a range membership, unless you are just a collector.
B.C is the one that started this crap I believe, P.Q. had there greasy mitts in it as well.
As you already have the guns you may be fine, but buy new one??? I think you will run into trouble, I have not sold anything into B.C for a while, so as a B.C. dealer

To buy a restricted in BC you need to have an rpal, as well as proof of range membership.

Att attached to your licence is country wide, if you can't find a club you want to join or can't find one that is accepting members just joint the Silvercore club for $40 bucks or whatever it is now and you meet any CFO requirements for proof of membership or obtaining a ltatt.

It's pretty straight forward out here, you just need to find somewhere to shoot as a guest or that does drop ins but the above allows you to buy and have a restricted transfered to your name.

You do not need a range membership to buy or own a restricted by law

The fact that all of you just bend over and take it is why they continue to claim it is.

Just spend 50.00 and join Silvercore, it gets you past the range requirement and give you chance to find a range.

Please enlighten me.

I thought an RPal was needed to buy/own a restricted firearm. The ATT is needed to transport it and you need a club membership to get an ATT. If you have an RPal and get a temporary permit you can transport it to your place of residence.

Is that not how it works?

AFAIK In Ontario someone challenged the CFO's insistence on Range Membership in order to get an ATT to go to a Range and rather than go to court they no longer insist in that Province.
That is my understanding of why Ont does not ask.

Not in BC. The CFO has decided that if "target shooting" is your reason for ownership, you need a place to shoot - hence, a club membership. You can still take the gun to any gun club or range, but you have to have a club that you're a member of as a "home club". If "collection" is your reason for ownership, you have to explain the collectability of the firearm and why you want it, and, since you're a collector not a shooter you don't need an LTATT. Since LTATT's are attached to your RPAL now, that part is largely irrelevant, you have one attached and get a nice piece of paper for your wallet if you need one.

What if you don't belong to a club but shoot ipsc/ipda ? How does that work for BC? Don't need to belong to a specific club for those.. but it's still target shooting.

Ppl have mentioned in that case they will take proof of enrollment in ipsic events, or some such crap... keeping everyone safe, one hoop at a time.

You have bought a restricted with out belong to a range I suppose, to shoot, not collect?

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I appreciate all of your comments and advice.

Abbotsford seems to be a popular choice for nearly everything. I'll probably join something small that's close by for now and get my name on their waiting list.

LOL! That just seems so weird to me though. I feel like I'm trying to join an exclusive golf club, instead of a gun range.

Cheers!

That was our member, Cyclone.

For some reason, I thought it was a Canada wide provision of Bill C-42 that made the ATT an automatic part of our RPAL's. But I guess I was wrong.

Either that, or the other provinces need their day in court.

Too bad we still don't have a Conservative majority.

+1 for Abbotsford but while you're waiting sign up with Silvercore if you want to procure some restricted firearms.
