With all the political correctness in vogue these days,I'm wondering how long snaring will be legal? Seems the more people live in cities the less they lose touch with their rural roots and outdoor lifestyle of which hunting and trapping featured prominently. With all the 'animal rights' gaining popularity,I can see a lot more activities being banned as 'cruel' ,simplistic city people not realizing that 'cruelty' doesn't even exist in nature ,it's just 'nature'.As humans we strive for a humain kill but that's as far as it should go

Snaring done properly is very humane... it is leghold traps, improperly used that attract most of the negative attention from the ill-informed.

I too think that leg holds would get the attention when it comes to anything getting ban. Ime, snares are very effective when set properly. But, as long as us as trappers do our diligence on making proper sets, and watching what we put on social media, I don’t see any problem coming our way, fingers crossed we don’t anyway.

Reality has nothing to do with sentiment, and once they start showing dead wolves in snares,or wolves still alive with aware noose around their neck ,I fully expect the politically correct will demand an end to it...nor do I doubt staging snaring to get maximum effect..remember the spring bear season in Ontario was stopped by images of orphaned Cubs....the fact that the sows were victims of vehicles on roads ,not hunting had nothing to do with it.
We just had the grizzly hunt banned in BC ,despite the fact that hunting has very little impact on the grizzly population and removing some mature boars increased the chances of cub survival with predation being a major factor

As long as some idiot doesn't feel the need to plaster a sharing video all over social media we will probably stay under the radar. I snared two snowshoe hares this week and had one for Xmas dinner. Was fantastic

I couldn’t agree more..... sometimes we are our own enemy on social media....

Point them to a UFC event and watch a guy go out in seconds from a rear naked choke... peaceful as a warm sudsy bath.

I recall a u tube 'bear hunt' which was put up by the anti bear hunting crowd right before the hunting season opened -it was a likely a staged event of the 'hunter' making multiple shots on a bear trying to get away and then high fiving over the kill....pretty disgusting, and likely as intended. I put nothing past these guys to whip up support and try and shut down a hunt and I consider it only a matter of time before they target snaring. What most people don't understand is it's a nothing to do with so called 'animal rights' or 'animal welfare' but an INDUSTRY designed soley to bring in donation dollars and they need new 'stories' to keep the money coming in

The sad part..... that wasn’t staged.....

If it wasn't staged,it certainly didn't put ethical hunters in a good light..I love getting out in the field but I don't need to kill something to make it a successful hunt anymore, not that I won't,I do and have no qualms about it ,but I think as I get older,I respect life more

It is probably not going to be long. If One SJW takes it up as their cause, more will follow.

41 below the other day so i decided to play on the computer and flicked the tv to the hunting programs . I never watch those shows and several segments made me cringe . I've been hunting for 60 of my 65 years and it takes a lot to make me cringe . How about two punk azzes dressed like gangsters chest bumping , fist bumping and high fiving while laughing and talking about 'laying a smack down on that deer'. Another program some azzhole is filming his hunt from a tree stand , fires the shot , looks at the camera and giddy like a girl he says , 'that's the biggest buck i ever murdered in my life'.

Anyway , if you want to snare rabbits go to your local craft store and buy spools of stainless picture frame wire . Works every bit as good as brass wire from Cambodian Tire for one quarter the price .

Just to be on the "legal" side stainless snare wire is illegal for snaring rabbits in Ontario. Only brass or copper is legal. 22 gauge with 4" loop max.

Darryl

I never knew that . I've used picture frame stainless wire for the last 40 years .

I hear you about the stainless wire. A C.O. pointed out to me (while I was snaring) that stainless was illegal and had been since 2008. Apparently stainless will catch and hold non rabbit species such as pine marten. With the recent ridiculous reduction from no limit to 5 rabbits (varying hare) the same C.O. advised me that I should only place 5 snares to ensure I would not go over the daily limit. I am not warming up my truck on a -25 morning to go check 5 snares. Seems one more time honored tradition has been ruined by the government.

I have a small trap line and run a bunch of coyote snares but here in Sask there is alot of regulation behind it. You cant just hang a snare and walk away, you need to have your trappers licence, then you need to go and get a permit from the CO's. You need to notify any land owners 500 meters from the snare site. The snares you use are made so that they will break for any animal heavier then your average coyote. You also need a permit to get road kill.
What Joe city public is clueless about is that its trappers that regulate cycles in nature. In areas where nobody traps you will have years of huge populations of certain species then disease comes in and they die a horrible death. A trapper keeps the species at the proper numbers and keep things balanced and disease does not usually hit and if it does its not as bad.
Every trap used in Canada is tested to the highest standards as to ensure a quick kill or a leg hold that does not injure an animals. Traps are certified by AIHTS. We are the leader in the world for humane trapping practises.
The internet and FB are ripe breeding grounds for the ill informed animal rights keyboard warrior, dont buy into their lies and fragile beliefs.

Cheers!!

The local university was over run with feral rabbits, they were everywhere and you should have seen the protests over even the suggestion they should be culled. The university reacted in outrage when a foreign student snared one and cooked and ate it,and said any student caught killing rabbits would be expelled....They raised tens of thousands of dollars to capture ,neuter ,vaccinate and transport hundreds of rabbits to a sanctuary where they would live out their life in peace and harmony....except there was hole in the fence and coyotes got them all.meanwhile we have a Zero vacancy rate in the city and people are living in tents and vehicles.,we can't get enough foster homes for kids who need a safe place to live..go figure....the world has gone crazy
