Vintage Imperial 30-30 w/ 170gr Sabre-Tips

If I owned them I would not shoot them. I remember my Dad had a hunting vest with these ctgs in the bullet loops.

I would.

Great hunting ammunition and ammo isn't anywhere near as "collectible" as some think. Kind of like commemorative Winchesters.

Performance of the 150 gr Pneumatic and the Sabretip were similar on game with the 30-30, both were fast opening bullets that delivered lots of shock on deer. In larger faster calibers such as .270, .303 and .30-06 the Sabretip was too fragile and quick opening to deliver good penetration on larger animals such as moose and elk. They quickly gained a reputation as a meat wrecker as they would leave huge areas of bloodshot meat. Most Canadian hunters tried them and then moved on to sturdier bullets for the more powerful calibres and bigger game. However the Sabretip had some following among .303 Brit. shooters because they fed so smoothly from the magazine and it was almost the only ammo you could buy that didn't deform sharp pointed bullets from recoil in the magazine.
I know lots of people that used them in the 303 British because that was the only ammo you could buy for them at the store .. lots of different 30-30 or 308 etc but only carried one shell in 303 .. 180 grain plastic nose

Actually, CIL marketed another pointed bullet that would not distort in a magazine.
That was the CPE [Copper Point Expanding] They were not a dependable bullet
though, since some expanded quite violently, and some would pencil through.
They were available in 30-06 and 303 British, and maybe a couple of other chamberings.
Not in 30-30 though. D.

Dominion, CIL, Imperial, IVI, they made good ammunition. Those 30-30 sabre Tips were known to be a good, in fact any calibre of Saber Tip had a good reputation. I do not consider myself old, but I guess maybe I am compared to many folks on CGN. I remember buying Dominion and Imperial Ammunition at Canadian Tire. I do not know why Imperial/IVI closed down maybe someone who knows could chime in in that. I have and old ammunition box collection, just stuff I have saved over the years, many of my Dominion and Imperial boxes are full to partially full. Don't be afraid to use it if you want, kind of shame to waste it on paper though.

I had a couple cards of each blue and yellow tipped 30-30 that was my dad's, we shot it out of a buddy's lever gun at the range. Worked well enough, I still have half a box of the 180gr .303 saber tip was thinking of shooting it but it has a bit of sentimental value to me.

I remember the CPE's , they were never thought too highly of . My father loved the 215gr KKSP's in his 303 , I used the same bullet to take my first Moose . I did use a lot of the 6.5X55 ammo , it was the only readily available ammo for my new in the grease M38 Swede ( I payed $50 for it ) back then .

thanks for sharing the pics.

I like the CIL blue tipped bullets. I have never seen them loose and did not know they had the crimp marks in them.

The 150 grain round-nose bullets were blue and the 170 grain bullets were yellow.

I found a bunch of the 170 grain Imperial 30-30 cartridges when I was cleaning things up after my father died. I plan on using them in the old Winchester 1894 I got from him years ago.

Basically in a nutshell, C.I.L. wanted to goo inn a different direction than civvy ammo (( economics) and when they sold too Valcartier Industries, the Government contracts were concentrated on and their civilian ammo went for crap.
