Cutting barrel /velocity testing? Update Feb.3

I have a Savage 10 TR ,308 ,24 inch barrel, Magneto speed chrony .
Cut to 19 inchs in 1 inch increments.

I finally got out today, to do my test.
First up, I wanted to sight in a new scope on it.
Scope was a bushnell 4.5-14 HD legend.

I rolled up 10 rnds, using Nosler data. Just for sighting in.

150 grain ballistic tip
46.5 Varget ( max load)
Federal 210 primers

First shot was 4 inches low,so I came up 4 MOA on the scope.
Second shot was dead center bullseye.
So just for the heck of it, I loaded 4 more and shot a 5 round group.
Wow. .842-.308=.534.
I almost changed my mind about the cutoff..lol


I should add that ammo used for testing was SAKO super hammerhead.

A hack saw is much better


Math should also work.

Well I’ll be doing it at the range and thought a grinder might be faster.
I’m going to re crown the barrel at 18.5.

And yes I’m putting on a new barrel,when mystic gets it for me.

And by math should work. Do you mean for measuring an inch:)

A quality hack saw blade will be just as quick. And much more accurate.

Plus you have less of a risk of burring the rifling.

I mean by math, there are formulas that will give you accurate muzzle velocities. But it would require some research.

Now I have to ask, why go through this to figure out exactly what velocities you have for that specific barrel with that specific load only to end up at 18.5" anyway then to replace the barrel?
 
I wouldn’t cut shorter than 19” to leave a bit of meat for smith to do final clean cut and recrown
Savages are disposable rifles, easily replaced barrels, why not?

It’s just for fun, I have a lot of spare time on my hands,so why. It.

Ya,I’ve read all that, but I’m bored and I want to try it myself.

Plus ,I want to see if the shorter barrel is more accurate.

Usually yes.... assuming the harmonics are less..

A properly stress relieved barrel will whip consistently. And barrels will be most accurate when a harmonic node is near the muzzle.

Shorter barrels are usually stiffer and I can't remember the term for it but they have less material and length so they usually behave more.

This has also been extensively tested and written about.


But if you want to do a fun experiment. Go for it.
 
If you want something electric to be fast, use a sawzall. It's pretty much an electric hacksaw. A jigsaw would work too. As long as it's a blade made to cut steel it'll work.
 
As been pointed out its been done already but its your project so why not? Do it :cool:. Are you planning to fire different loads at each barrel length? That would make for interesting velocity results.
 
I plan on testing for accuracy and speed at each length,and then a final accuracy test with the finished 18.5 barrel.

I’m ordering a couple of different bullets today,first thing I’m going to do is find a bullet it likes.

I’m also curious as to what the accuracy will be,with the unfinished barrel.
