It is starting to look like I will need to save up for a custom rig.

Am I expecting too much?

-.223 Wylde chamber 1:8 or 1:7 (preferred)
- Magazine fed (preferred - not absolutely necessary)
- Laminate stock (not a junk hollow plastic one)
- 20+" barrel
- Open sites would be great (notch/blade) with scope rail

Everything commercially available seems to be 1:9 twist.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I've had a few bolt 223's.
Bought them so I/kids could shoot cheap crate ammo.

Apparently primers on that surplus crate ammo are harder than normal so lots of fail to fires.

Sold them. Figured if I can't shoot the cheap ammo and am going to load for them, I'll run a 22-250.

Now use a BDL 22-250 with HS precision 4 and 10 round mags.

Spend your money on a CZ527 and you'll never regret it.

Read any of the dozens of reviews on it, or the threads on this forum.

It's the best you can get for the money.

I like the 7.62x39, in hindsight would most likely have gone the 7.62x39 route, and CZs are great guns as mentioned.

I am looking for a 1:7 twist. I plan to shoot 68 or 77gr projectiles. The CZ is 1:9 - same as my XCR-L.

I would try out a 7 twist barrel in my XCR - but not for $700.

Tikka T3x is right around $1k with taxes (plus scope/bases). It has a 1:8 twist.

I really would prefer an AICS magazine. I guess I had better start saving up for something custom...

How about a Remington 783. At $444 plus tax and shipping (with a cheap scope) I could re-barrel if 1:9 is not fast enough.

I think I had better sell the box of 250 77gr nosler competition bullets - Hornady 68gr work in 1:9.

Edit: an MDT LSS chassis would convert to magazine fed.

How about an Italian Sabatti Rover 600 in .223? They are on sale at Marstar at measly $599 (Rover Walnut 600, Bolt-Action, 4rd, .223 Rem. Calibres (Box Magazine). Sabatti is famous for producing extremely high quality barrels.

I've bought one in 7.62x39mm but those are already sold out. Fantastic rifle:

Tikka mags are restrictive to 2.3" OAL, not working with most 70+gr bullets.

Ruger Gunsite Scout fits the bill, except for barrel length. 16.1" not fast, but the rifle shoots very well and 2.5" mag box works well with a lot of bullets. 1:8 twist

Remington 783 seems to make the most sense at around $440 to my door. LSS chassis (next deal Black Friday 2018) and/or re-barrel to 1:7 or 1:8 if it won't stabilize 77gr projectiles.

I held a clearance .223 Gunsite Scout at WSS - way too heavy; barrel way too short. Still 1:9 twist. It was not worth it even at 30%/40% off.

Ruger Scouts are 1:8

Enjoy your 783 custom rifle

Ah yes - it did weigh a ton however. I purchased a Ruger Scout in .308 for my father-in-law a while back. They are nice and handy - great mags.

Jerry @ Mystic Precision seems to like them. I'll likely contact him if a re-barrel is necessary.

Mountain tactical has metal mags 223 measure 2.60”

Stop with your fixation on exact barrel twist.

You’ll get more hits on target with the CZ527’s 1:9 with any bullet weight than you will with any other rifle’s 1:7.

Please go to a local shop and hold a CZ527 before buying anything else.
