.223/5.56 bolt rifle wish list

Those CZ's are Tikka pricey - the Tikka's are on sale at Cabelas right now and are somewhat cheaper.

Our dollar continues to suck (or there are too many middle men in the distribution channel).

Edit: they sure are nice looking - hammer forged barrels. I guess I will save up/sell more stuff I'll never use. It seems to me that the 527 will work out of the box. It simply may not be worth chasing accuracy with 77 gr - 68 gr should work in 9 twist barrels

The Waters magazines are also able to handle 2.6" . They are very well made magazines, but they are expensive. As for the T-3, my Stainless varmint is very accurate with the 69gr TMK which has a very high B.C. for a 69gr bullet.In fact the B.C. is higher than for the 77gr SMK, and you can drive it faster.

That's a bit of a bold statement. And yes before you ask I have held cz527s. In fact I'm holding mine right now(albeit mine is a 7.62x39), with a 455 in the safe. I would say the t3 would give it a run for its money. OP can't go wrong with either options

Out of the gate performance a tikka or cz is excellent value, the build quality of those is a big leap above the bargain bin stuff. I would argue that's the sweet spot of quality vs money. Also consider howas as an alternative.

I shoot a .223 remmy 700 for coyotes/ varmints and as a trainer for a sister rifle in .308.

It's a 1/9 twist 20" barrel. Shoots everything from 50- 75 gr bullets just fine. No key holing even out past 400m. I would say 1/8, 1/9 twists are the do all of the .223 world.
 
What do you want to use it for NaviDave? I ask because the I have a Tikka t3 .223 1:8. Been shooting it for about 5 years now. I carry and shoot it a lot (fur and paper). I have fiddled with projectiles from 45-80gr, to 400m on game and 600m at the range.

My take is if you want to shoot at 400m+, at your elevation it's worth it to consider a custom (throat), and probably even 1:7 twist.

Anything less and the 60-70gr bullets are going to perform better (especially terminal performance IME). There is a vast selection of target, varmint, hunting and personal defence bullets in this range and if you are hand loading you should be fine with a 1:9.

These days I've mainly been using 60gr ballistic tips because because they shoot to nearly the same POI as partitions and the 62gr FMJ stuff I buy loaded for practice. Looking forward to trying some 75gr Hornady ELD's next, might be able to extend my coyote abilities to 500m.

Out of my gun, the 60gr ballistic tip makes it to ~350m with 1800fps and 4moa drift in a 10mph crosswind

My ballistic calculator tells me the 75gr ELD will make ~450m with 1800fps and 4moa drift - surprising considering it leaves the muzzle 300fps slower.

You don't make any sense... talking about building a custom rifle and then saying a $400 783 makes "the most sense." If you are quibbling over a few bucks from "off the shelf" factory rifles there is no way you are doing a custom. Buy the 783 or an Axis, that is where you will ultimately end up.
 
Let me try to explain myself. First of all, Jerry @ Mystic Precision suggests that the 783 lets you build a rifle $500 at a time. I also want to be able to stabilize projectiles up to 77gr and 1:8 would be a safe bet (should do OK with 55-77gr). Tikka mags appear to be proprietary, but a $400 LSS chassis would take care of that. I assume the T3 and T3x will both work with the LSS.

The 783 bolt is fairly sloppy - that's no good. I have a Rem 700 in 7rm from the 70's and that bolt is just excellent (it is also sub MOA with factory loads).

So I guess I wait for bonus time and pick up a Tikka T3x. I won't need to swap out that barrel or second guess myself.

The T3x Lite is $864 plus tax at Cabelas right now; the Varmint Stainless is $1215. The T3x Lite + Mountain Tactical mags seems to check most of the boxes. If the mags aren't available, the MDT LSS chassis is always a possibility.

Next questions:
Is there a real need move beyond the T3x Lite?
Are the MT mags really going to happen? (this appears to be a crowd funded project at the moment)
$14.99 flat rate shipping is mentioned - will there be any problems exporting/importing these mags? Is there an export limit ($500)?

I had settled on a 783 based on communications with Jerry @ Mystic Precision. However, I see Remington is shipping them with 14 twist barrels these days so ... I give up. I have no way of finding out how much a custom rig is. As they say in Letterkenny - I'm Out!

They are $798 at NorthPro and you would only pay the 5 percent gst
