Vertical Grip Mounted Too Close too Muzzle Brake?

Hey guys,

I recently bought a Magpul Vert Grip and mounted it on the second last section of my free float hand guard. My hand is about 2 inches away from the muzzle brake which redirects the horizontal gasses backwards at an angle. Think this is safe or too close for comfort? I'd like to keep the skin on my hands and have it as forward as possible as I find it easier to control and maneuver using the "tacticool" C-clamp method. Thanks!

Test fire it with some gloves. It's not going to blow your fingers off but if it's an issue you'll feel it pretty quick.
 
I’d be afraid of shooting myself in the hand �� Is there an advantage to the vertical grip? I see a lot of guns with them.
 
I tend to mount my vertical grips just like the one above, but I use my vertical grips more as handstops these days, to keep my hand from going too far forward on short-barreled rifles. I grip the handguard c-clamp style behind them. They grip is then also available to hold in the old-fashioned vertical-grip-style grip if I want to, with my thumb wrapped around the grip. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable gripping it the way shown above that close to the muzzle. If I was going to use the VFG that way I'd mount it farther back. Or use an AFG farther back as Still Alive suggested.

Edited - or be cool like Dilligaf and use the little finger stops instead ;)

Hmmm. You'd be bringing your hand past the grip to "lock" back against it, probably wouldn't want to trigger a round off at that point.
No offence (...then says something offensive), but the position of your thumb on the front sight in that grip doesn't look repeatable at speed? If you moved the grip back, you could wrap your thumb over top of the handguard? Then index the side of your thumb off the top of the front sight in it's folded position?

Having said that, I grip my SJC Titan at the same distance you've pictured, which is...quite a nasty brake:).
I use my Magpul sling loop attachment thingy as a reference point/handstop for the webbing of my thumb when I monkeygrip the front of my handguard.
Last year at a 3gun I got overexcited on an easy shot, slipped my hand right past it in my haste, and blew the skin off my knuckle. Do not recommend, although the Rorschach pattern I splattered on the targets was amusing.

Ouch! Exactly why I use a big-ass vertical grip as a handstop/reference point so I don't put a bullet through my hand.... when things get stressful and fine motor control goes out the window, I know I'd be the guy to do it!!

2 risks:
-barrel & comp misaligned: comp shaves and spits copper
-grip not installed tightly enough, just like in this vid:

otherwise the heat will tell you if it's too close
I run a similar setup (hammerhead comp on a 7.5'' barrel), and decided to mount the grip closer to the mag well (I run c-clamp as well, and no thx finger stops as well)

You need a better rifle!

And OP, listen to smellypete. He is very experienced and if he can F up, anyone can!
I use my VFG the same way as CobraGT, as a handstop more than a grip. And I would not want it where you have it. Not worth the small risk especially when you have more real estate to mount it further back.
 
If it's a 16" gun I wouldn't worry about it since your arm won't be extending far enough to reach the muzzle unless on purpose.

If it's a 7.5" gun then that's a different story.

yup Ive always loaded 28 rounds in my mags while deployed, But downloading beowulf's seems counterproductive...lol...

So Now after experiencing those little gems called Hex Pistol mags, I dont see why I would ever use my chitty beowulf's again.
 
Thanks for everyone's feedback and opinions. I do find it more comfortable where it currently sits on this 10.5". However, I do like the idea of having the skin on my hands still intact and bullet hole free at the end of the day so I think I'll go with the suggestions to move it back a notch :p
