223 WSSM - A bargain or a lemon?

The Hornady manual #6 claims .223WSSM barrels were cooked in as little as 350 rounds

Hornady used a custom barrel that was not chromed like factory barrels. They also state they didn't have a SAAMI compliant chamber which had too much freebore.

Hornady for whatever reason have always belittled the WSM and WSSM cartridges somewhat.

Personally I would have no hesitation in buying a .223 WSSM if the price was right.

First i do not to detract from the OP post. I like the WSSM and WSM bores and the greatest amount of experience is with the 243 wssm and the 300 wsm. They are both so accurate and can reach out and the recoil is very manageable. I have not had any loading issues with either of them. I never understood why the 7mm wsm didn't take off as the ballistics are as good or better then many other 7mm calibers. It would have been interesting if they had continued on with some larger calibers beyond the 325 wsm. It has been stated that the larger diameter bores like a 338 or 350 offered no gains against other cartridges in the larger calibers. But... if larger bore WSM cartridges were produced; and the trend of accuracy continued - (in likeness to the 270, 7mm, 300 and 325) as with these smaller bores they would have had my attention for sure.

I own one in a browning about varmint stalker, 223 wssm. It is accurate to beat all heck. I've got 550-600 rounds down the pipe and the accuracy hasn't depleted at all. Throat is fine. Shoots awesome. It is my main coyote rifle. And it's taken 2 wolves that were DRT. I've purchased factory only for this rifle, easy to find.
Don't be scared by people who've never owned one or by articles claiming otherwise.

This is true for many cartridges! .17 rem, .220 swift, 6mm rem etc. Etc.
