Shooting milsurps and preserving rifling condition

Purple do you know if they are making SR4759 again?? I'm down to my last pound. ,

I sure hope they are. I haven't needed to replenish my stash for some time. Best to Google IMR or Hodgdon to check. BTW, SR 4759 was the MILSPEC propellant for reduced loads in the .30 cal BMG (.30-06) frangible bullet rounds which were used in air to air gunnery training in WW2.

I've been looking for SR 4759 now for over 7 years, all I ever hear is that it was "discontinued". Nobody that I have asked has come up with an equivalent substitute.

That's my "go to" powder for cast bullets and magnum handgun loads. I stocked up.

The closest I've seen to it is Alliant 2400.

I've had some passible results with IMR 4227, no where as good as SR 4759 with cast lead bullets, in the last few years. In November I was able to get 3 lbs of Hercules (yep) 2400 which I've been looking for the last few years also. So I'll be doing some load development in 6.5x55mm & .32-40 come spring. I'm hoping that it works as well in my rifles as SR 4759 did.

I mainly use SR4759 in black powder rifles like my Kropatschek, my marlin 1895 carbine in 38-56 and 71/84 Mauser.

It duplicates black powder pressures very well in all 3 of those. Too bad I can't get more as it is irreplaceable in those cartridges.

4227 works well in many the cartridges I've use it in but I find I need to use a dacron filler to get reliable ignition. I tried it in 7.52x54r last year and couldn't get it to group well though..

My go tos are red dot, 4198 and 2400.

I like 2400 the best at 18 to 20 grains and accuracy is very good. I've yet to load it in any cartridge and not have useable accuracy right off the bat.

My 1903 Springfield eats a steady diet .311 180 grain cast bullets with medium charge of 4198 powder. Moa groups have been the norm with that combo.

My k31 shoots poorly with red dot and 4198, but 2400 gives me consistent accuracy even at 200 yards.

The main reasons I load cast is its cheap, bore wear is zero, and I can make my own bullets from scrap. Also shooting cast will make any of your bad habits very apparent. If you don't have a good trigger control, or your follow through isnt up to snuff the group will suffer.

During the powder shortage I really didn't mind as 1 pound of powder will get a lot of shooting done if you are loading cast.

I suppose if someone had a rifle they really like with a bad bore, they could always have a bore liner installed!! Better than becoming a wall hanger!

I used to use SR4759 in a couple 30 cal rifles. I think it was discontinued years ago and then manufactured again. Discontinued again now. I still have a lb left.
Worked up better loads with 4198 and 2400 for my mid cal milsurps.

I had a 45 pound drum of it and gave most of it away. I knew it had been discontinued. Now I am down to a jug or 2 and there is nothing quite as good.

I will try 2400 as a substitute when the time comes.
