I started calling coyotes about 15 years ago after I had found an old cassette that my dad had that had a dying rabbit distress on it. He told me many stories of the hay days of good fur prices and coyote hunting in southern saskatchewan where Iam originally from. Being a young obsessive hunter learning the ropes I went out and bought a 17hmr as that’s all I could afford at the time and bought a few hand calls and went at it. Lots of trial and error but started putting the peices together and became quite efficient at. Sold some fur and bought a 223 and my success doubled as I could shot more than 100 yards. Since then I’ve been hooked and go out every chance I get still even with three kids and very busy job. This year I picked up a 22-250 as I wanted to target wolves a bit more.
Last Saturday I had a few hours before I had to take kids to soccer and skating so I went out and did some calling. First stand about 15 minutes in I was wondering if I was going to strike out at this spot. There isn’t a lot of cover and the dogs usually come fast and quick within the first 5 min. I was just about to head to my next stand when 3 coyotes showed almost down wind . 3 quick shots I had all of them down. Just as I was about to get up and go get the truck I had one more coyote sneak past before I could shoot. So I was quite pleased 3 out of 4 was a good start

Next set up was a bust which surprised me as it’s always good for a coyote or two. So I headed to a spot where I had a pack come in last week and was only able to get one. Within the first five minutes of my rabbit distress call I had a nice male show up and put him down. I got on my pup distress hand call for 5 minutes on and off when I looked to the west and seen a coyote sitting on hill at 475yards. I tried every trick in the book to get him to come but he sat watching. So I took my big mitt off and waved it a bit and lip squeeked and that was enough for him to come charging in and killed him at 80 yards.
