I have both, and hunt both. A shame if your carrying the .44 and a nice buck presents itself at 150 yards...

I'm leaning towards the 44 mag as the rifle will be carried while dogging and blocking when we run the hounds, the furthest shot that would present itself in this situation would be 80-100 TOPS. While sitting in the morning and evening I use a scoped 270 wsm for the 200 plus yard shots.A shame if you are carrying the .44 and a nice buck presents itself at 150 yards and you haven't figured out how to adjust for that range with the ammunition you have.
It sounds like for the situations mike t is considering a typical .44Magnum will be nicer to carry and use than a typical .45-70, but the latter will do very well and will be more versatile.
