So recently I bought a Norinco M305 and ofcourse I had to get a case of Hirtenberger 7.62x51 146gr FMJ ammo.

Well it shoots ok in my Norc M305 and with the peep sights I can honestly say that I'm getting 3-4 inch groups.

But then I tried this ammo in my Remington 700 SPS and WOW I couldn't believe how good it was shooting.

My best 3 shoot group was a one inch group.:d

btw...I don't know if my ammo (1980) is Berdan or boxer but I give it a good cleaning anyway.

So, I'd like to hear your stories about this ammo, don't matter if it's good or bad.

I found that it was even more accurate out of a bolt gun after I crimped them using a lee crimp die. The neck tension was inconsistent to start with. A light crimp fixed that. I have shot many sub moa groups with it since.
The boxer brass is very soft and you need to trim a lot off if you plan to reload. Other than the stink of the bullets, and the little bit of corrosion, they are excellent plinker rounds for the money

How many reloads do you get with the boxer brass? have some and wonder whether it is worth the hassle. thanks!
I've tried it in all sorts of rifles and so far cannot get consistent accuracy, lots of fliers even in very accurate bolt guns (SSG69). Works fine in my 305's just disappointing accuracy.

I haven't reloaded it very many times. Maybe 3 in one SPS Varmint. I wouldn't bet on getting a bunch more. The primer pockets are tight but the soft brass really needs a trim every time it seems.

What’s your average group? We don’t want to know about your best group. Do you know how many sub MOA groups I shot with an SKS?

My average group with Hitenberger was just as good as my average group with Federal blue box 180gr sp,Winchester 180gr pp or Remington 180 gr Core Lokt.

That's my point,I heard that this ammo doesn't group all that well when in fact it does.

Now tell us about those sub MOA groups you are shooting with your SKS.

Tradex has crates on for $469 for 720 rds free shipping. I agree with AlbertaJohn it's a very reliable and accurate ammo for the sport shooting market. My Israeli mauser loves the stuff.

I shot 120 rounds through my former Axis - they shot well - the cases have been since full sized and processed going to reload them again - after I purchase another 308. I do like them and the fact that you load them 1-2 grains below regular brass due to the thickness of the Hirtenberger you actually save powder like getting one free reload every twenty rounds.

Funny you mention the brass thickness.... I weighed the empty cases (hirt vs. Federal comercial) and the hirt brass came out a couple grains lighter. Did a volume comparison.... wait for it.... the hirt brass had more volume by a grain and a half! (I use w231 powder for the test as it doesnt "stack" like stick powders, I know guys use water...) I did this same test with 5 different cases of each, and my results were similar, all using 80 headstamp hirt and federal comercial brass.

So, what does that say? To me, the brass isn't thicker, thinner if anything. Maybe thicker around the case head. But I have yet to cut one open.

I talked about my findings with a buddy and he wasn't familiar with the hirt surplus but is with reloading .556 Lake city. He asked if it had the nato cross in a circle stamp. I said no, he said it's probably not any thicker brass then commercial if it doesn't have the nato stamp. Food for thought.
