Has there been any modern attempt to roll back the classification on rifles deemed 'prohib' by name? Successful petition runs brought forward, etc?

Looking for a little history.

No, nothing public, anyway. The mechanism for petitioning parliament that we have now did not exist then. Regardless, the pro gun movement did not have much momentum and any move to remove guns from the OIC list would have had zero chance of success. When the first bill was being drafted to kill the universal firearms registry the Conservatives floated the idea of allowing ATTs to be issued for transporting prohibited firearms to the range again. The media screamed bloody murder about "machine guns in the streets" and every suburban minivan owner in the country panicked and the bill died almost instantly, delaying the demise of the registry. If the public wasn't even going to accept the idea of us engaging in harmless target shooting with the guns we already own, they certainly weren't going to allow more of us to own more guns.
