hey there. I'm gonna start to reload 44 special and 44 mag. anyone have any experience reloading the 44 mag on a Dillon square deal b? is it difficult being such a big cartridge on a small press? lube? no lube? I haven't purchased a conversion kit yet but I'm looking at 150$...

my other option... I have a set of dies for a single Stage I'm just missing the bullet expander die.... I could go that slow route on my single stage..... prob cost me 30$ and time.

. thoughts??

I wouldn't consider the SDB a small press. My only concern is whether you can get enough powder in the casing. Not sure what the charge volumes are but if the powder bar will do it, give it. Nice part is you can eyeball each one for powder as well.

You will be fine, have at it.

Lubing the cases is not necessary, but it will cut down the sizing effort quite a bit. I clean the lube off the loaded rounds by spraying them with rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner and rolling them back and forth in a towel.

I would say it depends on volume. How many cases do you have?

If less than 500, it is quite efficient to size/prime a bucket of brass, bell a bucket and then charge/seat a bucket.

I used to load 44 MAg and 45Colt on my single stage because I did not load that may cases and not very often. But once I got buckets of brass, I put the dies in a Dillon tool head.

This. Lubing the cases is much easier on your arm and the press.

Rubbing alcohol is the sort of stuff that leaves an oily residue, not unlike what you're trying to clean off. I would moisten a cloth with methyl alcohol (gas line antifreeze) or isopropyl alcohol to clean the lube off.

Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. The 99% stuff that I use is a more effective solvent, but neither it or the standard 70% concentration will leave a residue of their own.

Methyl alcohol/methanol/methyl hydrate will work, but is much more poisonous than isopropyl alcohol. It is probably best to minimize skin contact if you go this route.

My Square Deal handles thousands of .45 ACP ....there is a large powder bar available which will provide lots of powder..I don't lube and have had no difficulty
