Hey all,

I have a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle, 583 series, that I purchased new from Cabelas last Easter. I was very busy with work at the time and didn't get to first shoot it until just recently where after about 300-400 rounds of flawless function between three shooters, I noticed that the rear sight was loose during cleaning after the range trip. I could not for the life of me get it to tighten - the screw seems to catch in and then un-thread again. I'm at a loss for what to do, and unfortunately I've entirely misplaced the screw anyway in a move after getting posted to where I live now with the Army. It was hard to keep a handle on such a small part that doesn't actually stay on the rifle like it's supposed to - I also lost two Carcano clips. ;_;

I have a few questions:

1) Where can I order a replacement screw?
2) If the screw doesn't work, this would mean the hole itself has something wrong with it - who would I go about talking to to get this remedied? How would this even be remedied?
3) If this new screw does work, provided I find one, does anybody know where I can order Mini 14 tech sites in Canada?

I know there's a lot of ITAR garbage about shipping gun parts out of America and our dollar seems to be Zimbabwe-tier, so I'd prefer Canadian sources for these things. Provided the new sight screw works, it'll be a temporary fix as the tech sights are a much better arrangement anyway. I do not want to order tech sights if the hole on the receiver itself is pooched, so I'm going to try a new sight screw first.

Any help would be appreciated and you're all welcome to ask any questions you may have. I really, really like this rifle and I miss being able to take it out to the range. I'm sitting on a lot of 5.56 and the rifle is getting very hungry.

Thanks in advance!

Thread repair is easy. Are you trying to start the bolt without the sight in place? It could have been cross threaded or stripped accidentally at some point. Either way it should be a #6-48 and available from gunsmiths and Brownells. It would take a lot of idiocy to damage the receiver threads to the point they couldn't be repaired in one way or another. They may just need to be chased to straighten them out. Have a good close look at the threads on the end of the bolt and in the receiver for damage. Try starting the bolt without the sight if you haven't already. It may be something as simple as having to lift the sight off the receiver to get the threads started or there may be some damage to either part. Either way it will be an easy fix.

Cheers. Thanks for the tip about starting the the bolt without the site - I'll do that tomorrow and report back.

I ordered a set of Tech Sights from optics planet. About $125 to my door. Straight bolt on replacement / improvement. Would highly recommend and would buy again should I pick up another Mini-14.

I originally went to the range to sight in the Mini. Some aggravated adjustments later, I thought I had it. Got home and the sight was flopping around all over the place...hence my move to Tech Sights.

x2 I didn't even bother with the factory sights. I have tech sights on my mini 14 and 30.
