Hey all,

Figured i would chuck up a post about the new toy im putting together, and open it up to discussion. Perhaps it might clear the water for some, i havent found a ton of info on set ups like this.

Ive got a few things with this set up i want to sort of debunk or prove:

1. The utility and function of a Vortex Crossfire 2 6-18X44.

2. The accuracy you can get out a 783 using specifically Barnual Ammo (62gr).

Ill talk about the gun a bit first. We picked it up a few years ago for cheap. Accu trigger, the barrel is slightly thicker than other brands's sporter offerings.

We slapped a Cheap bushnell 4-12 on it and off to the races we went. Its a 50/50 split with a buddy of mine. We rotate the use between us no problemo.

We never really kept tabs on tracking the accuracy on the thing, but i will say this. It was viewed as a lazer pointer. We would have shoot offs with it and the 17HMR at clays out to 300yrds.. and we never found a big difference between the accuracy between them if at all (the HMR was a savage heavy barrel, not a cheap one either 6-700 bucks that IS super accurate; but again no proper measurements were being taken)

All of this was done with a crate of cheap Barnaul ammo. we had one shell get stuck in the gun, and a consequential broken extractor but that was it out of 500.

Now we have put on a Crossfire 2 6-18 on it that we picked up from the EE. I was interested to use of these, as the turret clicks are crisp and zeroable, the glass seems decent enough and the feel on it was good.

Ive somehow became a vortex guy, with a Razor spotting scope 1st gen (which i have found to be very very good) and a Razor HD LH 3-15 (which I also love... sweet eye box, super clear image long eye relief). But im interested to fully see what this lower end (higher mag) vortex scope is like, ill post feedback on it and the gun and the accuracy of it. Its hard to get honest and detailed reviews of gear online.

-The gun is mounted using Leupold PRW high rings (could likely get away wit mediums but i just had them), soon to be a firefly bipod (50% off a cabelas), a sling stud which im going to have to drill and secure because of the 783's stock, and a raised cheek pad.

So yeah, i will let you know how it all unfold

783's are decent budget rifles, had 2....30/06 and 7mm. Traded the 7mm only because I got a deal on a Vanguard in 7mm and prefer them, still have the 30/06.

Okay so I was able to mount it and then quickly run to the range with a dozen left over mixed bag shells I had (Barnual and Hornady Steel Match)

I was able to get it zeroed right away. I was able to get a quick group off with the steel match which ran 1.5" or something, and then I shot one with barnual quickly that in the neighborhood of 2".. just off of a front rest, no rear.

First impression of the scope.

1. I had the magnification up to 18. It somehow has quite good eye relief! Not something i was really expecting or really cared about, but with the stock bases on the gun i have it roughly 1 CM from as far forward as it will go.

2. I found the glass to crisp up with the AO pretty good, even in the 18x range, however my eye did get fatigued pretty quickly and blurr out when it was on the highest power. Ill work to offset this by making sure ive got both eyes open, and double check the fast focus eye piece. Next time I will have the cheek pad in which should help with centering.. Maybe it'l make a difference.

(bipod isnt on yet)

Cheers

Added a Boyds lightweight thumbhole, $150 from Prophet River...not too bad of a stock.

I'll be interested to hear if this helps accuracy or not. I've been considering putting my 783 in a Boyds stock but am worried it may be less accurate without having pillars.

I'd say any Boyds stock needs to be bedded to get the best out of it. I didn't see any loss of accuracy with it from the OEM plastic...but bedded I expect a slight improvement.

Took her to the range again today

I was able to get one five shot group under an inch at 100 using Barnaul steel case! Felt pretty good. However most groups were in the around the 2MOA range. I was going to save the
targets and upload them, but the targets got pretty wet at the end. I also was cranking on the scope to see how it was tracking and returning to zero (which it did!)

But i am looking to do a "semi" official test, whats the most official way to test accuracy? 5-5 shot groups? What sort of time in between? is a warm up shot allowed for the barrel?

i picked up a 783 in 7mm rem for real cheap lol cheaper then they already are
i put a nikon prostaff 3-9x40 on it and made up some handloads for it
it really shot very accurate 3 shots in a inch at 100 yrds
not a tack driver but a great hunting rifle that you dont have to worry about banging it up

What Cal is that in?

It's chambered in .243. I'm one of the lucky people who got a 783 that was exceptionally well made. I get consistent 3 shot .5" groups with 55gr and 100gr bullets. I really want to pick up an At-one stock but am worried groups will open up even with it properly bedded.
